Williams sign Logan Sargeant for 2024 to complete F1 grid

Despite the belief Sargeant would be replaced, Williams have announced they are keeping the American for 2024.

Williams announced the 2024 contract with Sargeant earlier today, excited to see how he performs in the new season.

Sargeant finished 21st in the drivers championship, scoring one point across the 22 race season. His teammate, Alex Albon finishes 13th however, with 27 points in total.

However, in their announcement, Williams were keen to state they see potential in him despite this.

The team said: “Logan demonstrated the fundamental speed required to perform at the highest level, building on these foundations race by race, solidifying his place in our line-up.”

A race winner in all junior Formula series, he placed fourth in the F2 standings in 2022. This was behind AlphaTauri reserve driver Liam Lawson, F2 2023 world champion Theo Pourchaire and Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich.

While regarded as a strong junior driver, his rookie season in F1 was far from uncriticized. Several incidents throughout the year led to many questioning his worthiness of being in F1. However, Williams were keen to state that they have seen improvement in the first point scoring American since Michael Andretti.

In the announcement Sergeant said: “I am thrilled to be continuing with Williams Racing for the 2024 season, it has been an incredible journey with the team so far, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue developing as a driver within such a talented and dedicated group.

“We have exciting plans for the future, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success in the coming year.”

The news comes after team principal James Vowles was unable to confirm Sargeant’s seat in Abu Dhabi. With all seats confirmed bar his, it created doubts for his future.

“Logan has demonstrated immense skill whilst under the pressure of the world stage”

Questioned after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Vowles said: “Whatever happens, Logan has been part of the Williams academy for many years and will always remain a part of our academy.

“He is a quick driver but if we step away from that – if you look at the last five races on how he has improved and is stepping forward.

“You can see signs that what he is doing is what he needs to earn the seat, but we aren’t in a position to confirm that. We’re proud of the steps he has made this season.”

However, Sargeant retaining his seat makes clear that the tune has changed in the Williams camp.

In the team’s statement, Vowles was more than happy to speak well of the driver.

He said: “Logan has demonstrated immense skill whilst under the pressure of the world stage, making him a perfect fit for our team.

“We have great confidence in his abilities and believe that together we can achieve even greater success in the upcoming season.”

The team seems to be in a moment of prosperity securing their highest constructors position since 2017. Ultimately not due to Sergeant, the team hopes it can keep the forward momentum in 2024.

Sargeant’s signing means there had only been change to the driver line-up since 2023. This is Daniel Ricciardo replacing Nyck De Vries at AlphaTauri.
