Today We Say Goodbye To The W Series

After failing to secure funding, it’s time to say goodbye to the W Series.

The all-female series hit financial trouble last year, cutting the third season short despite only two rounds remaining.

The aim was to secure investment or a takeover deal so that the championship could be resumed in 2023.

But today the news officially broke, that the W Series has gone into administration.

And so we wave goodbye to the W Series.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

David Coulthard, a shareholder in the series was one of many who criticised investors for failing to put their money where their mouth is.

We’ve seen a huge push for women’s motorsport yet when it comes down to it, the appetite to invest in female talent seems to be lacking.

Women’s motorsport needs more than just goodwill to succeed, and the W Series has highlighted that actions or in this case money, speaks much louder than words.

Verbal support is one thing. But financial support is an entirely different ball game.

Did Formula 1 Let The W Series down?

But whilst the W Series has been struggling where were Formula 1 or the FIA?

Whilst Formula 1 has gone on to develop the F1 Academy, should they have stepped in to save the W Series?

It’s a kick in the teeth.

Despite the goal of enhancing opportunities for women, neither organisation stepped in to help.

If anything, it is Formula 1 and the FIA who have failed.

Because if they really cared about strengthening women’s racing they would have been the first to jump in and save the W Series.

It shouldn’t be F1 Academy VS W Series, it should be one united push to improve women’s motorsport.

Yes as a business, the W Series had its flaws. But the greater purpose behind the W Series made it worth every penny.

This was the opportunity we’ve been waiting for.

This was the opportunity for the motorsport community to rally behind an all-female championship…
