W Series reaches 1 million UK TV audience

As the dust settles over Silverstone, W Series are celebrating a milestone audience of 1 million UK viewers over the British GP weekend.

After securing a new broadcasting deal for this season, the Silverstone race weekend was broadcast live across Sky Sports and Channel 4 for the first time. An average of more than 710,000 viewers tuned in to see home hero Jamie Chadwick claim her sixth consecutive W Series race win – her first on home soil – in an action packed race.

Celebrating the success of the race weekend, Catherine Bond Muir – CEO of W Series – is pleased with the unexpectedly large UK TV audience.

“[In Miami] we achieved our largest-ever TV audience to-date, with 453k viewers across the Sky network. Coming into our Silverstone race weekend, we set ourselves the ambitious target to double that. To achieve a peak of more than 1 million viewers is a landmark achievement in our history and a real statement of our intent.”

“I’m incredibly proud that W Series has achieved this milestone, but we’re not done yet.”

Bond Muir also took to twitter to share her pride at the success of the series despite the negative attitude many had to it initially.

Both broadcasters, Sky Sports and Channel 4, were also impressed with the large audience reached by W Series this weekend.

“We were very pleased to see record viewing once again for the W Series race at Silverstone. It’s great to see Sky customers’ appetite for this thrilling competition growing so strongly.”

Stephen van Rooyen – Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Sky UK & Europe

“Having supported W Series since its inception we are delighted to see it continue to grow in popularity.”

Pete Andrews – Head of Sport at Channel 4

W Series continues on 22-23rd July when the drivers take to Circuit Paul Ricard in France for their 5th race of the season.
