At the Canadian Grand Prix, Aston Martin introduced a significant upgrade package that boosted their performance. Fernando Alonso managed to outperform Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, securing second place and finishing within 10 seconds of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.
Despite being instructed to “lift and coast” for 45 laps due to a suspected fuel system issue that never actually materialized, Alonso was able to maintain a competitive pace. Verstappen, who has won six out of eight races this season, acknowledged that Aston Martin’s upgrades brought them closer to Red Bull in Canada.
“From our side, I don’t think it was our best day because of the tire temperatures and other factors. That doesn’t help,”
“But I also know that with their updates, they naturally improved. So, for sure, they got closer to us.”

Reports suggest that Aston Martin has further updates in the pipeline to enhance their 2023 car, with plans to introduce them at the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
“After Sunday’s race, we’ll only be able to optimize the package in Spielberg and Silverstone,”

In the drivers’ championship, Alonso is currently 78 points behind Verstappen but is now just nine points behind his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez.
As for the constructors’ championship, Aston Martin has closed the gap to second-placed Mercedes to a meagre 13 points. Which would be very achievable with the amount of races left this season. And could lead to a very interesting second half of the season.
