Sergio Pérez sees the triple header as a chance to have a ‘reset’ after a run of bad performances.
Following an ‘unexpected’ P8 finish at Imola, Sergio Pérez displayed worse runs at Monaco and Canada. Similarly, like in Monaco, the RB20 failed Red Bull’s #2, forcing him to withdraw late at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Recently, the Mexican racer has revealed his preparations and expectations for a ‘comeback’ ahead of the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix.
Sergio Pérez ‘forced to reset a little’ to have a ‘successful weekend’ at the 2024 Spanish GP
After finishing P9 and P10 in the FPs, Pérez faced a major setback in the 2024 Canadian GP qualifiers. He failed to make it in the Q2, as he delivered an underwhelming 1:13.326 lap time.
In the race, the case worsened for the Mexican, as his RB20 crashed onto the outside wall. After hitting a wet patch on his right slicks, he crashed into the Turn 6 barriers on Lap 53 of the race. Consequently, he severely damaged his RB20’s rear-ending, before retiring into the pits. In the race’s aftermath, he ended up scoring 0 points, while Max Verstappen left as the winner.
Regarding these, Sergio Pérez has acknowledged that he needs a “successful weekend” at the 2024 Spanish GP to makeup for his Canadian “disaster“. Speaking in an interview, he said:
“Coming into Spain I know I need a successful weekend, after a disaster in Canada.”
Similarly, in Monaco, his RB20 suffered a major crash on Lap 1 when Magnussen ran out of space on the inside and made contact. Hence, Pérez’s crash at Montréal was the second upset in a row for the Mexican. Reflecting on this, he admitted that he was at their headquarters in Milton Keynes to “work with the team and identify” the problems. He added:
“Sometimes you are forced to reset a little and we have done that since the last race. I have been in Milton Keynes working with the team to try and identify where and what we can do better to ensure I am getting the most out of this car.”
Pérez ‘confident’ to ‘get things right and bring home the result’ in Barcelona
Having been inside the top-five for the past five seasons at Spain, he is hopeful for ‘strong comeback’ by getting “things right and bringing home the result” that he’s capable of. Expressing his confidence, he further added:
“I am confident in the car and the performance we can execute from it, but I need to show that on track better in Barcelona.”
“I always enjoy the Spanish GP; it feels a lot like home, and everyone makes me feel so welcome.”
“It’s a circuit I know very well and the RB20 should be quick around this type of track, so it’s down to us to get things right and bring home the result we know we are capable of.”
As of now, he has tallied only four points in the last three rounds, which has dropped him to fifth place in the 2024 Drivers’ Championship. He now trails his teammate Max Verstappen by a significant 87 points.
In any case, Sergio Pérez will definitely eye for glory as he enters the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend. The 2024 Spanish GP is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 PM (GMT time) on Sunday, June 23rd.
