Marc Márquez has completed one of the biggest championship turnarounds of the 2026 MotoGP season, winning the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano to move back to the top of the World Championship.
Just seven rounds ago, Márquez was 102 points away from the championship lead and appeared to have fallen out of contention. Now, after his 78th MotoGP victory, the reigning World Champion sits level on points with Jorge Martín at the head of the standings.
The result was helped enormously by a dramatic opening lap for Marco Bezzecchi. The Aprilia rider entered the Grand Prix as championship leader but crashed from the lead at Turn 13, handing Márquez a golden opportunity that the Ducati rider ultimately converted.
Álex Márquez produced an impressive comeback from ninth on the grid to finish second, while Pedro Acosta completed the podium for KTM.
Bezzechi’s Title Hopes Suffer Early Blow
Bezzecchi made the perfect start from pole, successfully defending the lead from Marc Márquez through Turn 1. For much of the opening lap, the Aprilia rider looked comfortable at the front. Then came Turn 13.
Bezzecchi lost the front and crashed out of the lead, bringing his race to an immediate end. He was unharmed, but the consequences for the championship were significant.
With Bezzecchi gone, Márquez inherited the lead while Jorge Martín moved into second. The Aprilia rider had been hoping to build on his championship advantage at his home Grand Prix, but instead left Misano having surrendered the lead in the standings.
Martín Takes the Fight to Márquez
Márquez initially controlled the race, but Martín was never far behind. By Lap 5, only four tenths separated the two title rivals. Martín then made his move on Lap 7, diving up the inside at Turn 4 to take the lead.
Rather than immediately fight back, Márquez stayed close. Behind them, Álex Márquez was also beginning to apply pressure after battling his way past Pedro Acosta. The Ducati rider’s patience eventually paid off.
Marc Responds as the Race Swings Again
Márquez gradually rebuilt his pace and began cutting into Martín’s advantage. On Lap 12, the reigning champion retook the lead at Turn 6. From there, he began to establish a small gap, while the battle behind him continued to change the podium order.
Álex Márquez made his move on Martín two laps later at Turn 6, pushing the Aprilia rider down to third. Then came another crucial move.
On Lap 16, Acosta attacked Álex at Turn 8 and moved into third, dropping Martín another position. The championship leader was suddenly down to fourth, with his title advantage disappearing rapidly. Fermín Aldeguer then passed Martín for fourth, further damaging the Aprilia rider’s points haul.
Álex Márquez Pushes Until the Finish
While Márquez looked increasingly comfortable at the front, Álex refused to let his brother escape.
With five laps remaining, the Gresini rider had reduced the gap to around half a second. Pedro Acosta was also within striking distance, sitting just over a second behind Álex. The pressure remained until the closing stages, but Marc kept his composure.
Álex was still around half a second behind with two laps remaining, but he could not find a way past. Márquez crossed the line to secure his 78th MotoGP victory and complete a remarkable return to the top of the championship.
Rest of the Grid
Second place was an important result for Álex Márquez. The Gresini rider had started ninth but carved his way through the field to finish just behind his brother. The result was made even more significant by the team’s special Marco Simoncelli-inspired livery at its home Grand Prix.
Acosta continued his strong run of form with another podium. The KTM rider followed his victory at Aragón with third at Misano, making it his fifth podium of the 2026 campaign.
Fermín Aldeguer completed an impressive ride in fourth, while Martín had to settle for fifth.
It was another difficult home Grand Prix for Francesco Bagnaia. The Ducati rider crashed out of the race, ending his Misano weekend in the gravel and adding another disappointing result to what has been a difficult season.
Elsewhere, Raúl Fernández finished sixth, ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, Enea Bastianini, Luca Marini and Fabio Quartararo. Brad Binder, Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, Franco Morbidelli and Pol Espargaró completed the remaining points scorers.
Championship Standings
The biggest consequence of the race came in the championship standings. Marc Márquez and Jorge Martín now head to Austria level on 274 points, with Marco Bezzecchi 33 points behind them in third.
For Martín, fifth place was not disastrous in isolation, but the context makes it a costly result. He arrived at Misano as championship leader and leaves level with Márquez.
For Bezzecchi, the situation is even more painful. A crash from the lead at his home Grand Prix means he leaves the weekend 33 points away from the championship lead after what had been a hugely promising weekend.
Márquez, meanwhile, has completed perhaps the most dramatic comeback of the season.
The championship now heads to the Red Bull Ring, where three riders remain firmly in contention and the battle for the 2026 crown has been completely reset.
