As per NBC News, recent events at the Miami Grand Prix revealed a dispute between Andretti Global and Formula 1 over Andretti’s bid to enter the sport.
Tensions flared at a private reception, where Maffei allegedly expressed his opposition to Michael Andretti joining Formula 1. Michael is Mario’s son and the driving force behind Andretti Global.
The incident unfolded during an invitation-only breakfast reception at the Palm Club, where Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali inquired about Mario Andretti’s recent visit to Washington.
Andretti had been invited to speak outside the Capitol to call on the sport to accept their application to become the 11th Formula 1 team.
Recounting the encounter, Andretti described how Maffei interjected, wanting to stop Michael’s entry into Formula 1.
“Mario, I want to tell you that I will do everything in my power to see that Michael never enters Formula 1”
While Maffei declined to comment on the matter, a source close to Liberty Media offered a different account. The source asserted that Andretti initiated the conversation at the breakfast.
According to this source, Maffei conveyed to Mario Andretti that their application had been rejected for sound business reasons.
Formula 1’s rejection of Andretti Global’s bid earlier this year cited concerns about the team’s competitiveness, prompting Andretti to challenge the decision. The dispute has escalated with congressional enquiries and calls for antitrust investigations into the sport’s alleged anti-competitive behaviour.
Andretti maintains that Andretti Global meets the criteria set forth by the FIA to join the grid. Despite the setbacks, he remains hopeful of finding a resolution within the next two years.
