Andretti Cadillac has made a significant move in its ongoing bid to join the Formula 1 grid by signing former F1 Chief Technical Officer Pat Symonds as an Executive Engineering Consultant.
Symonds, who recently left his position as F1’s CTO after a seven-year tenure, played a crucial role in shaping the technical regulations for the 2022 and 2026 seasons. With the chassis rules for 2026 now largely finalised, Symonds decided it was the right time to depart from his role at F1.

Michael Andretti’s organisation, Andretti Global, has promptly secured Symonds’s expertise for their ambitious F1 project. The 70-year-old engineering veteran will be based at Andretti’s newly opened UK headquarters in Silverstone, following a period of gardening leave.
We are pleased to announce that British motor racing technical expert Pat Symonds will join the Andretti Cadillac team in pursuit of entering the FIA Formula One World Championship.

Michael Andretti is “really happy”
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Pat to the Andretti family,” Michael Andretti announced.
“Pat’s keen understanding of aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, and Formula 1 power units will be instrumental as we continue to build a competitive team.”
“I believe his expertise has been pivotal in shaping the narrative of Formula 1, and his vote of confidence in joining our effort speaks volumes. I’m really happy with this next step as our work continues at pace.”
Symonds will reunite with his former Benetton and Renault colleague, Nick Chester, who currently serves as Andretti Cadillac’s technical director.
Chester expressed his enthusiasm about the reunion, stating, “I have had the pleasure to work with Pat in the past, and he has a wealth of knowledge we can draw upon. Pat will bring expertise across technical areas and team operations in his role as Executive Engineering Consultant that will help us develop the team.”

The Andretti Family are doing everything they can
Andretti’s strategic recruitment of Symonds marks a significant step in its determined effort to secure an F1 entry, despite being denied a spot on the grid for the 2026 season. The team has not been deterred and continues its preparations, including opening the Silverstone headquarters and initiating a robust recruitment drive.
Pat Symonds brings with him a rich history in Formula 1, including his integral role in the Benetton team that won championships with Michael Schumacher in the mid-90s. His career also includes a tenure at Renault, a consulting role for Virgin, and serving as CTO at Williams before joining the F1 organisation in 2017.
The initial rejection of Andretti’s bid sparked controversy
The rejection of Andretti’s bid to join F1 as an 11th team has sparked significant controversy in the United States. Mario Andretti recently appeared on Capitol Hill, where several Congress members questioned F1 and its American owner, Liberty Media, about the bid’s rejection, citing antitrust concerns.
This scrutiny has led to calls for formal investigations by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. Additionally, the House’s Judiciary Committee has launched its probe into the matter.
As Andretti Cadillac continues its pursuit, the recruitment of a high-calibre professional like Pat Symonds underscores its commitment to establishing a formidable presence in Formula 1.
With F1 leaving the door open for a new entry in 2028, potentially with bespoke GM power units, the motorsport world will be watching closely as Andretti’s journey unfolds.
