Get to know Formula 2 and the drivers with the EverythingF1 Team. This is the new series of ‘Get to Know F2’ with this one featuring the Boy from Barbados, Zane Maloney.
What is Formula 2?
Formula 2 is one of the key feeder series into the most fought after series in motorsport, Formula One. Although Formula 2’s following has grown, still not many people know about the talent seeping through, which could potentially be a future F1 world champion.
Formula 2 is made up of 11 teams and 22 drivers, it’s a series known for its young talent as well as a rigorous racing schedule. Unlike Formula 1, every race weekend of Formula 2 includes a multi race lineup. You’ll have qualifying on the Friday, sprint race on Saturday and a feature race on the Sunday.
The sprint race grid is determined by reversing the top 10 of qualifying, this is so that drivers can show their over-taking and general race skill. Following this the feature race on Sunday will be the qualifying results from Friday not reversed. Drivers and teams gain point from both races – and these are similar to the point system in Formula 1.
Zane Maloney: Who is he?
The boy from Barbados, Zane Maloney is definitely a driver to watch in the racing series of Formula 2. Maloney was the 2019 British Formula 4 Champion and also came 2nd in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2022, where he raced for Trident.
It was announced in December of 2022, just before he sets foot into his first full season of Formula 2, that he would be made a Red Bull Racing Junior driver. In the role he would complete Formula 1 testing duties for Red Bull, this being a huge opportunity for the young driver.
Zane Maloney is the first ever Formula 2 driver from Barbados and even the wider Caribbean. Starting his racing career through Karting. He was quickly noticed by motorsport professionals.
Currently 9th with 48 points on the board (4th June 2023) he has definitely shown talent in his rookie season. The 19-year-old drives for the team Rodin Carlin, in which this season he has taken home 2 podium finishes. One of these in the season opener of Bahrain and the other at the all famous track of Monaco. The boy from Barbados placed 3rd in each of those feature races, and has shown exceptional driving capabilities.
Altogether Maloney comes with an array of awards when he headed into this Formula 2 season. And fortunately so far he hasn’t disappointed. We look forward in seeing what the Red Bull junior has to offer for the rest of the 2023 season.
