It was hard to imagine a driver’s press conference where Pierre Gasly was not quizzed on Esteban Ocon.
Speaking at the Canadian Grand Prix, he said, “It’s a long story between Esteban and myself, and we’ve been able to work and cooperate. Considering the story between us, I think it’s been good.”
After a long hesitation, he found the right words to speak of the man he has a tough relationship with. The pair go back to competing in karting as children alongside other drivers such as Charles Leclerc.
“It’s a bit annoying to see my name always come up in discussions.”
News broke last week that the Frenchman was departing from Alpine at the end of the season. While he states otherwise, the departure did occur mere days after his collision with Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix. This has left some questioning why the longstanding relationship between Ocon and Alpine is coming to an end.
Conversation naturally shifted to Gasly’s future. When asked about any potential move or extension, he shared that “for [his] future at the moment, I have nothing to announce.”
With Alpine’s struggles this season, you have to wonder if he will remain at the team. Despite this, he stresses that the team “know we are still on the back foot.”
He believes that they are in the process of “thinking about how we can approach the development of this car concept” in order to improve and enter the points consistently each race weekend.
As he looks to the Canadian weekend, he understands that “a lot can happen on race days, but we’ll [Alpine] try our best. We know we are fighting for a point right at the back of the top 10.”
