The F2 sprint race at the 2025 British GP saw Fornarolli secure his first win in Formula 2. Montoya finished in second place, with Stanek completing the top three.
The reverse grid saw Fornarolli start on pole with Maini right behind.
Intense Start
Maini led the race by turn one with a flying start while Verschoor fell away to P8 after a rocky beginning.
Fornarolli and Maini went side to side by turn 6, but he couldn’t get past a solid defense and had to wait. Turn 7 was a very close call; both drivers avoided contact, and Fornarolli managed to gain P1 back at turn 9.
Given all this fighting, Montoya and Stanek were able to get dangerously close behind the pair. Montoya benefited from an amazing race start, going from 6th to P3.
Lap 2 – 10
Fornarolli almost already managed to get away from DRS while Browning and Lindblad battled for the last points in P8. Verschoor ended up in 10th by lap 2. Simultaneously, Montoya was catching Maini for 2nd with DRS.
Fornarolli had the fastest lap by lap 3, and Mini managed a spectacular overtake on Marti for 12th. Browning was still heavily attacking Lindblad but couldn’t make it, resulting in Verschoor catching up behind them.
Montoya received the fastest lap, allowing him to shrink the gap between Maini and him to 0.0334s by lap 4.
Maini managed to get back inside DRS range by lap 5 but still had to defend Montoya, who grew significantly more frustrated over the radio.
By lap 6, Maini got the fastest lap while a small contact between the wheels of Browning and Lindblad allowed Martins to get further from them in 7th.
By lap 7, Browning finally managed to pass Lindblad for P8 but had to heavily defend from the Campos driver for multiple turns afterwards. At the same time, Lindblad had to look into his mirrors for Verschoor, which allowed Browning to get away.
Browning managed to get the fastest lap while a lockup from Dunne enabled Mini to try a move on him. Action that resulted in a contact and a puncture for Dunne, who fell away to P22. The Italian driver, however, stayed in P12.
By lap 9, Verschoor overtook Lindblad for P9, but 2.5 seconds separated him from Browning for the last sprint race points.
Lap 10 was raced under a yellow flag in order to retrieve debris from Mini’s front wing in sector 1.
Lap 11- 20
Once the green flag came back, Maini fell out of DRS range on Fornarolli once again. Dunne, who stopped for a new set of softs, was almost lapped by Fornarolli but kept pushing in P22. Mini received a 10s penalty for causing a collision with Dunne.
By lap 12, Dunne made good use of his soft tyres and got the fastest lap. Meanwhile, Fornarolli flew away 1.484s away from Maini in 2nd.
Browning started chasing Martins by lap 14, and the pack (P4-P9) was catching up on Montoya and Maini, who lost significant time battling each other.
While Crawford chased Durksen for 5th, Montoya finally moved up to 2nd.
Miyata, who stood 19th, received a 10s penalty by lap 16 for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on Cordeel.
The battle was still raging between Martins and Browning while Montoya broke DRS from Maini at the front. Stanek almost went out of track limits chasing Maini for 3rd, a situation the favored Durksen, who almost reached P4.
Still chasing Martins, Browning came under attack from Verschoor. Further behind, the Campos fought each other for P10, Marti went wide, forcing him to back down and get passed by Mini.
By lap 18, Fornarolli kept a gap of 1.7s, and Dunne was forced to retire his car while a pit lane infringement against him was noted by the stewards to be investigated after the race.
A fierce battle for P3 started between Stanek and Maini while the six cars between P3 and P8 were bunched up together with only 1.5s separating them all.
Martins started attacking Crawford for P6 by lap 19, but couldn’t make it. In front, Montoya managed to fly away and secure 7 seconds between himself and the 3rd driver.
Last lap
As we headed into the last lap, Stanek got P3. However, his questionable placement raised suspicions of track limits infringement to gain this place, and considerations to give it back were given by his team.
Contact between Browning and Martins allowed Verschoor to get by and snatch the final point.
The 2025 British GP F2 Sprint Race was Fornarolli’s first race win of the season. Across the finish line, Durksen and Crawford were separated by only 0.001s, allowing the former to get 5th position. Browning ended his race in P7 despite his contact with Martins, who had to settle for P9.
