The F2 Qualifying 2025 British GP saw Martins secure his first F2 pole position. Dunne qualified in second with Crawford completing the top three.
First set of laps
All the drivers were out on track within the first five minutes of the session, apart from Miyata, who seemed to have an issue with his car.
Many of the teams warned their drivers about heavy wind over the radio as well as the high track temperature of 42,2°C, making this session a particularly tough one to apprehend.
Crawford was the first driver to set a time but was rapidly topped by Montoya with a 1:41.225 lap. Verschoor, however, had a purple middle sector, which allowed him to get a provisional pole. Browning then came second, only 0,311 seconds behind.
While Miyata still couldn’t get on track, his teammate Martins stole the first place with an impressive 1:40.710 lap time.
Simultaneously, Dunne went wide on his first push lap and Esterson spun fully, resulting in a short-lived yellow flag until he was able to start again by himself. After these two slight issues because of the wind, Montoya was unable to beat Martins, regardless of his purple middle sector, resulting in a 3rd place. A result that was immediately taken away by Crawford.
Meguetounif flew on turn one because of the wind but recovered quickly. Cordeel, for his part, spun and couldn’t get back out of the final corner, resulting in a Red Flag.
Post-red flag laps
After a five-minute break, the session resumed, but only a few cars came out immediately. Notable mention for Miyata, who was finally able to drive on track.
Unfortunately, the Japanese driver came back to the pit with no time set and retired for the rest of the qualifying due to a technical issue that his team was unable to fix in time.
With 15 minutes remaining, Dunne was the first one to push and came in third, 0.098s off pole despite an excellent purple middle sector.
With 10 minutes to go, all drivers, except for Cordell and Miyata, were out. Crowford set provisional pole at 1:39.971, and Stanek ended up right behind him, 0.094s short. Verschoor tried to hunt them down, but his best effort only resulted in fourth place.
Durksen, who was on a flying lap, slid at the end and ended up in fifth place. Martins fiercely took back the pole with an extraordinary 1:39.731 lap, closely followed by Dunne 0.065s behind. Fornarolli had a good start to his lap but struggled with the wind and went wide, securing only eleventh place.
With two minutes to go, Browning secured twelfth, not the result he hoped for at his home grand prix. Montoya found time in the second sector and took home fifth place while Verschoor aborted his lap early due to the lack of improvement. Almost all the drivers struggled with their tyres. The only improving driver was Fornarolli, who set his personal best first sector and stole Lindblad’s 10th position during the final remaining minute.
Results
The official first and second row goes as follows: Martins in pole position, Dunne right behind, Carwford in third, and Stanek in fourth. Noteworthy mentions include Maini and Fornarolli, who qualified 9th and 10th, placing them on the front row for the reverse sprint grid.
Formula 2 will be back tomorrow at 1:15 pm local time for the eighth sprint race of the season.
