The F2 Qualifying 2025 Belgian GP saw Dunne secure his second F2 pole position. Miyata qualified in second with Stanek completing the top three.

First set of laps

Qualifying for the 2025 F2 Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps started with the entire field heading out at once. Immediately creating heavy traffic and making clean laps hard to find around the seven-kilometer circuit. Crawford was the first to set an early time, but his 2:24.954 was always going to be beaten as the track evolved.

Browning then established the first proper benchmark, stopping the clocks at 1:58.537 and making that the time to chase. As tyres warmed and drivers found space, the lap times tumbled rapidly in a fierce succession of improvements.

Dunne was the first to topple Browning, going quickest with a 1:58.340, just 0.003s ahead of Fornaroli, who slotted into second. Mini was the only other driver within a tenth at this stage, moving up to third and only 0.078s away from provisional pole.

As drivers pushed hard, not everyone managed to keep it clean. Goethe’s fast lap was deleted for track limits, dropping him to 22nd.

With around twenty minutes still on the clock, most drivers went for a second attempt on their first set of tires. Hoping that track evolution and a bit more space would help them improve their times.

20 minutes left

Verschoor managed to get his lap in amid the chaos, putting him seventh for the moment. While Browning was not able to respond and chose to box. Meanwhile, Dunne continued to find time on his next effort, delivering a 1:57.863 on his second lap. An astonishing improvement that made him four-tenths faster than anyone else in the field and stamped his authority on the session.

At this stage, the top three read Dunne, Fornaroli, and Mini, with major gaps forming behind after Dunne’s show of pace. Goethe, meanwhile, remained frustrated in 22nd after his best time was deleted.

15 minutes left

With fifteen minutes left in F2 qualifying at Spa, everyone returned to the pits to prepare for a second set of laps, resetting ahead of the final push.

As the clock ticked down to ten minutes, cars were fitted with fresh Soft tyres before heading back out for their last runs. All drivers were on their out laps with just under ten minutes to go, anticipation building as the question remained whether anyone could challenge Dunne’s earlier benchmark.

For five minutes, the timing screens stayed unchanged as no one posted a new time. Verschoor slipped to tenth in the standings, with Crawford in eleventh.

Then, the final sequence of laps began; everyone started to find more pace and set personal bests as the track continued to improve. Dunne, meanwhile, was untouchable. Setting purple sectors in both the first and second sectors as he leaned into his last efforts.

Crawford broke into sixth, and Martins momentarily climbed to second before being immediately displaced by Miyata who went to P2 for ART Grand Prix, but still sat 0.419s behind Dunne’s pace.

The order continued to shuffle as more drivers improved, Stanek moving up to third. But the rest could only watch on as Dunne delivered a stunning 1:57.151, outpacing the field once again and confirming his dominance.

Final laps

As the clock reached zero, Browning and several others crossed the chequered flag and wrapped up their efforts. However, a handful of drivers still had time to squeeze in one last lap. Goethe, Shields, Maini, Meguetounif, Crawford, Esterson, Dunne, Verschoor, and Duerksen all launched final flying laps before the session officially ended.

Dunne ultimately aborted his last lap despite showing promising sector times, and had Verschoor right behind him on track. Verschoor, urgently needing a top ten start as the championship leader, pushed hard but could not improve his time and ended up stuck in 11th place for both races this weekend.

Dunne stood out as the clear top driver, comfortably claiming pole position. Miyata and Stanek secured second and third. Martins, Lindblad, Marti, Fornaroli, Mini, Cordeel, and Goethe completed the top ten in a session that concluded with Dunne undeniably the driver to beat.

Results

The official first and second row goes as follows: Dunne in pole position, Miyata right behind, Stanek in third, and Martins in fourth. Noteworthy mentions include Cordeel and Goethe, who qualified 9th and 10th, placing them on the front row for the reverse sprint grid.

Formula 2 will be back tomorrow at 1:45 pm local time for the ninth sprint race of the season.
