Oscar Piastri claimed a brilliant victory at the F1 Spanish GP Race 2025, leading a McLaren 1-2 with Lando Norris. The win was sealed after a dramatic six-lap sprint to the finish following a late Safety Car caused by Kimi Antonelli’s engine failure. The closing laps exploded with tension as Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell battled for the final podium place.

Into the first corner
The race began with Piastri on pole. He made a clean getaway and defended well into Turn 1. Verstappen snatched second from Norris, splitting the McLarens early. But George Russell dropped back to sixth by the end of lap one, losing out to Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc. Behind, chaos hit the midfield—Colapinto, both Saubers, and Antonelli ran off at Turn 1.
Piastri and Verstappen broke away in the early stages. Piastri then extended a gap and dropped Verstappen as Norris closed in. By lap 13, Norris breezed past the Red Bull driver for second. Verstappen, on an aggressive three-stop strategy, pitted and rejoined in eighth.
The midfield saw intense battles. Lawson fought Albon and Bearman hard, while Hulkenberg scrapped for the top ten. Alonso clashed with Albon, who suffered a second broken front wing and later retired. Verstappen, meanwhile, was vocal over team radio, struggling with car handling and shifting issues.
Leclerc passed Hamilton early and held fourth. Ferrari’s strategy was tight, with both cars pitting early to avoid undercuts. Norris and Piastri led solidly mid-race. Piastri stopped on lap 24, rejoining behind Verstappen before retaking the lead once Red Bull pitted again.
Safety Car and late pit stop
With 16 laps left, Piastri led Norris and Verstappen. All three stopped once more when the Safety Car appeared. McLaren double-stacked efficiently. Red Bull controversially fitted hards on Verstappen. The restart on lap 61 saw a bunched field. Leclerc attacked Verstappen and passed him, with Russell also getting involved. Contact between Russell and Verstappen caused damage to the Mercedes.
The incident handed breathing room to the McLarens. Piastri kept calm and controlled the pace to the line. He finished 2.4 seconds ahead of Norris, with Leclerc third. Russell took fourth but Verstappen, penalised 10 seconds for contact, fell from fifth to tenth. But should the penalty have been more severe?
Nico Hulkenberg finished fifth, marking his first points since Australia. Hamilton came home sixth, ahead of Hadjar, Gasly, Alonso, and Verstappen.
The F1 Spanish GP Race 2025 delivered action from lights out to the final flag. Piastri now leads the championship, showing composure, pace, and maturity in one of the most thrilling finales of the season.
