The warm sun was beating down on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ahead of F1 Qualifying at the 2025 Spanish GP. Engines roared and drivers kept their heads down in a close fight for Pole position in round 9 of 24.
Q1 Commences
A gorgeous day for it, Q1 got underway as the drivers weaved their way around the tricky corners of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
McLaren had brought with them some car upgrades here in Spain, and had showed a promising performance in the practice sessions earlier in the weekend. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had topped the timesheets in the practice sessions, in addition to a McLaren 1-2 in the 3rd practice session.
The drivers set the fastest laps of Q1 and made their way back to the garages, satisfied that their laps were fast enough to get them through to Q2. Norris was later moved down to P3 after Max Verstappen secured a lap 0.001s faster than his rival.
Yuki Tsunoda failed to put in a decent lap time, placing his RedBull at the back of the grid. It’s been an unfortunate season for Tsunoda, who has consistently been at the back of the pack for most of the qualifying sessions so far.
Franco Colapinto, Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon, and Nico Hulkenberg were also unable to secure a place in Q2.
The Lights Are Green For Q2
The sky was looking darker, with grey clouds creeping in. George Russel complained over the radio about the potential incoming bad weather. It was getting darker, but the potential for rain was not a threat.
With five minutes to go, all of the drivers had trundled into the pit. A much needed breather from the close battles earlier in the session. Who can use these five minutes to really push and give themselves a chance to secure pole in Q3?
Ultimately, many drivers were unable to improve heir times. Ollie Bearman, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Alex Albon were knocked out.
Isack Hadjar showed a stellar performance for the RB team, placing his car in 6th, ahead of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.
Pole Position Shootout
Q3 Got underway in a chaotic manner. Drivers were not afraid to push their cars to their very limits in an attempt to secure pole here in Spain.
It was looking very positive for the McLarens, who had performed brilliantly in the practice sessions, and so far here in Qualifying. They had a little bit of mischief in the fight for pole, getting a little tangled trying to go top.
Additionally, it was great to see an RB and an Alpine in the runnings for the front rows. Although ultimately they didn’t end up at the front of the grid.
The Final Standings
Oscar Piastri managed to secure pole ahead of his teammate Lando Norris in Qualifying at thew 2025 Spanish GP, placing the McLarens in a 1-2 position for tomorrow’s race.
Max Verstappen took third place, with George Russel fourth and the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton in fifth.
