Driven to Redefine: The Iron Dames and the Future of Racing

From creating lap records to breaking barriers, this all-female racing team is proving that speed has no gender.

For decades, motorsport has remained one of the few global sporting arenas where women have consistently struggled for visibility, opportunity, and equal footing. Yet, a fearless team of women is shifting that narrative lap by lap. They’re fast. They’re focused. And they go by the name Iron Dames.

Founded in 2018 by Deborah Mayer, the Iron Dames project set out with a simple but powerful mission: to promote and support women in motorsport. It was about encouraging performance, empowerment, and equality on merit. And the results have been nothing short of inspiring.

Racing with Purpose

From competing in prestigious endurance events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans to winning races in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and European Le Mans Series, the Iron Dames have proven they belong on the world stage. When they became the first all-female line up to win an FIA WEC race in Bahrain 2023, it wasn’t just a result. It was a statement that a fully female crew can go head-to-head with the best and triumph, purely on performance.

At the heart of the team are drivers like Sarah Bovy, Michelle Gatting, Rahel Frey, and rising star Doriane Pin. These are talents whose pace and poise have garnered attention across the racing world. These women are not only racing some of the world’s most gruelling circuits; they’re also rewriting motorsport history in real time.

Representation that Matters

What sets the Iron Dames apart is their understanding that real progress isn’t just measured in media coverage or hashtags. It’s measured in access, support, and the opportunities created for others. That’s why the initiative extends far beyond the track.

Through mentorship programs, educational partnerships, and outreach initiatives, Iron Dames offers young women entry points into motorsport. In a sport where visibility directly fuels opportunity, the they are making sure young girls see themselves not just as fans, but as future drivers, engineers, strategists, and leaders. They are building infrastructure where there once was none, ensuring that talent has a pathway regardless of gender.

The Iron Dames are part of a broader, long-overdue shift in motorsport. Their success is prompting organizations, teams, and sponsors to rethink what inclusion means and why it matters. It’s no longer just about ticking a box. It’s about unlocking talent that’s been overlooked for far too long.

Their presence and performance are sending a clear message: motorsport is better when it reflects the diversity of those who love it.

The Road Ahead

The Iron Dames have achieved incredible milestones, but their mission is far from complete. As they continue to compete and lead, their impact extends far beyond lap times and podiums.

This is about building more than a team. It’s about constructing a movement that leaves no room for doubt about the capability, commitment, and competitive fire that women bring to motorsport.

And that legacy is already taking shape. As young girls watch the Iron Dames defy the odds and dominate the field, they aren’t just seeing heroes, they’re seeing possibility. Inspiring, fast and fiercely focused, the Dames aren’t waiting for the future of motorsport to change. They’re racing toward it and dragging the whole industry with them.
