Could Lewis Hamilton Have Saved Mercedes?

Lewis Hamilton claimed Mercedes ‘didn’t listen’ to his concerns about the 2023 W14 Car.

Listen To Your Driver

The 7 time World Champion is no rookie, so should Mercedes have listened to his concerns more? Do engineers need to have more faith in their drivers to give feedback?

If anyone is going to know the car its the driver, particularly an experienced driver. After the disappointment of Bahrain last weekend, it is unsurprising that Hamilton told BBC F1 podcast that he ‘knows what a car needs’.

Hamilton’s remarks came after team principal Toto Wolff admitted Mercedes had made a mistake in continuing to pursue their car philosophy after a difficult 2022.

You only have to look at Aston Martin to see that they’ve missed the mark. Same Mercedes engine, but very different car.

Side Pods Are In

Mercedes’ controversial ‘no side pod approach’ certainly seems to be the wrong one, and Lewis Hamilton can certainly say ‘I told you so’.

Toto Wolff even admitted in Bahrain that the Silver Arrows (who aren’t so silver this year), will have to abandon their controversial “zero-sidepod” concept in order to challenge again.

But is it too late? Are Mercedes effectively a year behind?

Only time will tell. But I for one hope they get their act together and can challenge for wins this season!
