It sure was, because this was no boring qualifying session.
Max Takes Australia
We expected Red Bull domination but Verstappen had to work hard to take his 22nd career pole in tricky conditions.
Verstappen set a time of 1m 16.732s to take his 1st ever Australian pole. Ahead of Russell, who was 0.236s off the pace. Whilst Hamilton ended up 3rd on the grid, giving us a happy Lewis Hamilton, for the first time in a long time.
Are Mercedes Back?
Even the biggest Mercedes fans were surprised to see the not so silver arrows take 2nd and 3rd. But is Russell showing early qualifying dominance? In the team battle it’s Russell 3-0 Lewis, as he outqualifies his team mate once again.
But qualifying is one thing, race results are another. Will the Mercedes have the race pace to keep up with Max? Or will we see Aston Martin and Ferrari rise to the challenge?
Seeing Red
It was game over for Perez after he ended up in gravel in Q1. A massive lock up at turn 3 ruined his hopes of securing a pole in Melbourne. It looks like Red Bull reliability is still proving an issue.
The Australian GP qualifying was certainly not short of drama.
Weather always spices up qualifying, a wet, cold and windy Albert Park made for very interesting conditions.
If you missed the Australian GP qualifying, because you slept through your alarm, then the results will certainly surprise you.
To summarise, we saw Albon put in an incredible performance for Williams. We can now start asking ‘are Mercedes back?’ And Red Bull reliability shattered hopes of a 1-2 in Melbourne.
It only happens live once, so don’t forget to set those alarms tomorrow.
The race starts 3pm AEST.
