3 Winners and 3 Losers from the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix

The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix marked the end of an exhausting triple header for Formula 1 and its feeder series, Formula 2 and Formula 3. While most of the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ran smoothly, a late Safety Car turned the final laps into a chaotic sprint. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest winners and losers as the paddock has a well-earned breather.

Winner – Oscar Piastri

A composed drive saw Piastri extend his lead in the championship to ten points over his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. The Australian continues to showcase maturity beyond his years, consistently delivering strong results even under pressure. Piastri heads into Canada with five wins this season. This ties him for the most wins in a season for an Australian. This is alongside former race winners Alan Jones and Jack Brabham. Heading out of Spain, Piastri remains to have a solid grip on his chances for the title.

Loser – Max Verstappen

Involved in a tense scrap for P4 with George Russell, Verstappen made controversial contact with him towards the end of the race. This ultimately earned him a ten-second time penalty. The result dropped him out of the top five and, more worryingly, pushed his penalty points tally to 11 for the season—just one shy of a potential race ban. With two of those points set to expire on June 30, Verstappen will need to drive clean in both Canada and Austria to avoid any further problems.

Winner – Charles Leclerc

The Monegasque driver made the most of a mistake by Verstappen to snatch a valuable P3 finish. It marks Leclerc’s second consecutive podium after his P2 at Monaco. This signals Ferrari’s growing consistency in race pace and strategy as they move up to P2 in the standings.

Loser – Williams

Whilst they historically have not enjoyed the Barcelona circuit, this year’s race was a tough blow for Williams. Both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz suffered from front wing damage in a Lap 1 incident, forcing them to pit early. Albon’s race went from bad to worse when contact with Liam Lawson led to further damage and a ten-second penalty. The team was ultimately forced to retire the car. Sainz, despite a late charge on soft tyres following the safety car, could only manage P14. This marks the first time Williams has failed to score points since Bahrain.

Winner – Nico Hülkenberg

A standout result for the veteran driver, Hülkenberg brought his Kick Sauber home in P5—matching his best-ever F1 finish. The ten points are a huge boost for the team, especially in what has been a turbulent midfield fight all season. Hülkenberg’s experience was key in navigating the early race-start chaos. He capitalised on important moments in the race, avoiding collisions and damage whilst the other mid-field teams struggled. While it may not have been a Grand Prix victory, Kick Sauber and Nico Hulkenberg will surely feel like winners after this.

Loser – Kimi Antonelli

The young Mercedes driver suffered a cruel twist of fate, losing power and being forced to retire from the race on Lap 55. The incident brought out the race’s only safety car and ended Antonelli’s afternoon prematurely. It was a disappointing result for the rookie, who had shown promise throughout the weekend before mechanical failure struck.

With the championship battles heating up and fatigue setting in after three consecutive weekends of racing, teams now turn their focus to the Canadian Grand Prix after a week off.
