Chloe Chambers secured pole position early on in a rainy F1 Academy qualifying session for the 2025 Miami GP ahead of Alisha Palmowski and Doriane Pin.

It rained over night and the weather was colder and cloudier, creating different track conditions compared to the practice sessions yesterday. There was a chance of rain, which came early in the session.

As It Happened

The drivers poured onto the track in not-so-sunny Miami to set their laps before the rain came. Doriane Pin’s engineer reported rain coming in a few minutes, making these first few laps crucial for the drivers.

There were drops of rain on the camera lenses as Chloe Chambers led the field on their fast laps. Gademan reported rain further behind Chambers. Chambers set the pace with a 2:00.458 ahead of Palmowski and Pin. There was a lot of traffic for drivers like Pin because everyone was fighting for track position.

Lia Block went off track as the track became increasingly slippery, and many others took advantage of the run-off area. The rain was stopping anyone from setting flying laps because of the lack of grip. Despite the rain, many drivers elected to stay on track to keep temperature in the tyres. However, it didn’t look like the track conditions were going to improve.

Onto the Wet Tyres

Ten minutes into the session, everyone was in the pits as a result of the rain. Until this point, all of the drivers had been on dry tyres. Now, the teams were putting wet tyres on the cars to give the drivers experience on the wet tyres for the races. The rain stopped falling, but the track was still quite wet. The drivers exited the pits to get some experience in the wet with these cars.

With half of the session left, some of the engineers thought there might be another chance to set flying laps on dry tyres at the end of the session. In the meantime, many drivers were setting laps on the wets.

The first and third sectors were beginning to dry, but sector two was still wet. With only a few minutes left in the session, it was becoming clear there wouldn’t be any improvements. While many drivers chose to set some laps on the wet tyres in case the races were similar conditions, a few, including P1 Chloe Chambers, elected to stay in the pits.

The checkered flag flew under wet conditions with no improvements made.
