Academies in motorsport are becoming more and more commonplace. This is especially true in Formula 3 where a plethora of drivers competing in 2025 are linked to Formula 1 Teams. With the start of the 2025 Season this weekend, Everything F1 sat down with some of the drivers to talk about how important these driver academies are.
The 2025 Formula 3 Championship: Ones To Watch in Melbourne
Rafael Câmara
The 2024 Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine Champion will be making his Formula 3 debut in Melbourne. As he takes this next step up the motorsport ladder, the Brazilian will enter his third year as a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Ahead of the first races of the year, Câmara spoke about how being a part of this has helped him across the board.
“Yeah, since I joined Ferrari, it has been very helpful for me. Not only as a driver, but as a person outside of the track. And for sure it helped me a lot to prepare for the race weekend. Physically and mentally. So, it feels very great to be part of it. Also, as Ferrari, to be part of a big family is very nice.” – Rafael Câmara
That family has grown bigger this year, not only with the arrival of Lewis Hamilton but with the return of Zhou Guanyu to the fold. A nice big family to be part of indeed with a wealth of experience to learn from!

Alessandro Giusti
The French driver joined the Williams Driver Academy last year as he also competed in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine. So while relatively fresh to the experience of being a member of an academy, Giusti can already attest that there are a number of benefits.
“Yeah, to be part of an academy (there are benefits,) mentally, physically. We have a trainer, so that’s a good thing. Especially, it’s easier with an academy. Also, to be part of a team which is historic, like Williams, is very good. So, yeah, very useful!” – Alessandro Giusti
The French F4 Champion is another rookie heading into Formula 3 this year. But with fellow Williams Academy drivers such as Luke Browning and Jamie Chadwick on hand, he’ll have plenty of guidance to help him on his way.
2025 Australian Grand Prix: The F3 hometown hero
Ugo Ugochukwu

Last year’s Macau Grand Prix winner is obviously a member of the McLaren Driver Academy. Of the three drivers here, Ugo has been part of his academy for the longest and without them, he may not be making his Formula 3 debut this weekend.
“Of course, it’s really good to be part of McLaren. I’ve been with them for a little while. It’s really good to be supported by such a great team in the sport. I think I can learn a lot from them – and I have been the past few seasons. They really helped my development throughout my career and make sure I’m ready for the next step, which is now F3.” – Ugo Ugochukwu
Ugo first joined McLaren on a long term deal back in 2021, after winning the FIA OK-Junior European Karting Championship. Lando Norris also achieved this on his rise to Formula 1 and McLaren look like they want to repeat this success with Ugo in the future.
Academies to become the norm?
There are three very different drivers here, each with associated with an iconic Formula 1 team. Ferrari. Williams. McLaren. To see each of these teams, and more, taking an interest in and developing young talent from an early age is fantastic to see and encouraging for those who want to follow in their footsteps. Moreover, it’s excellent to see that each of them is not only helping the drivers with the physical aspects of motorsport, but the mental ones too – something that has become more or a prevalent issue at the forefront of conversations in motorsport in recent years.
F1 Academy is also brilliantly filling in the gap in the market where female racers are concerned and we’re seeing more Formula 1 teams take notice as a result. With more and more drivers joining or aspiring to join academies, the question now becomes – is it essential to be part of one to reach Formula 1 or can independent drivers still thrive and make it without one?
