In a surprising mid-season shakeup, Williams has announced that Franco Colapinto will replace Logan Sargeant for the remainder of the 2024 season. The news comes after a long spate of crashes and no points finishes in the first half of the season, with Sargeant also only accumulating one point in 2023.
Following a big crash in FP3 at the 2024 Dutch GP which left the American driver in the garage for the entirety of Quali, Team Principal James Vowles has opted to replace the youngster. Reports indicate that Sargeant harboured the most damage to his car in 2023—more than the other 19 drivers on the grid. For a team as small as Williams, the amount of money Williams has poured into repairing Sargeant’s damage has proven too much to handle.

Franco Colapinto’s Big Opportunity
Franco Colapinto, currently a Formula 2 driver and a member of the Williams Racing Driver Academy, has impressed with his performance this season. Sitting sixth in the F2 championship with 96 points, the young Argentine will make his F1 debut at the Monza Grand Prix. “It is an honour to be making my Formula 1 debut with Williams – this is what dreams are made of. The team has such amazing history and a mission to get back to the front which I can’t wait to be part of,” said Colapinto in a statement.
This will not be his first experience in an F1 car, as he previously participated in the first free practice sessions at the British Grand Prix. However, Colapinto remains aware of the challenges ahead, acknowledging that “coming into F1 mid-season will be an enormous learning curve, but I am up for the challenge.”
A Difficult Decision For Vowles
In a statement released today, James Vowles acknowledged the difficulty of replacing a driver mid-season, stating, “To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season.”
Vowles emphasized the importance of recent car upgrades and the need to maximize every points-scoring opportunity in the highly competitive midfield. “We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximise every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle,” he explained.
He also highlighted Williams’ commitment to nurturing young talent, pointing out that this move aligns with their long-term strategy. “We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of across the final nine rounds of the season,” he added.
From 2024 Onwards
With Carlos Sainz due to join the team after losing his Ferrari seat to Hamilton come 2024, Colapinto will replace Sargeant to act as an interim driver for the rest of the season. It must also be noted that Sargeant, who has had a tumultuous career in F1 since his career began last season, could also do with some respite from what looks to be a brutal campaign.
Vowles expressed gratitude for Sargeant’s efforts, stating, “This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all, throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude. Logan remains a talented driver, and we will support him to continue his racing career in the future.”
The Argentine’s presence on the grid marks a significant moment for F1, with Colapinto being the first Argentine driver in the sport in over 20 years. Fans are eagerly anticipating his debut and the potential he brings to the Williams team.
