Fernando Alonso 2024 Spanish GP: Aston Martin needs ‘to work harder, to talk less, and deliver more’ after ‘deserved’ loss
After Sunday’s race, Fernando Alonso had another subpar performance, missing points for the third time in four races. He finished 12th, a lap behind Max Verstappen’s (P1) winning time of 1:28:20.227. Unluckily, Lance Stroll also delivered a poor run for Aston Martin, as he grabbed P14.
Moreover, atop him, Aston Martin’s major F1 rivals–Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes–took over the ‘P8 and above’ spots. Surprisingly, Alonso also fell behind the Alpines and Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg. In overall, the race was really a thing to forget for the Spaniard, as he was in his home ground.
In the post-race session, Alonso confessed that his team “deserved not score any points” as they “didn’t have the pace the whole weekend“. Reflecting on this, he explained:
“For sure it is disappointing as we didn’t score any points, but, we deserved not to score any points because we didn’t have the pace the whole weekend.”
“In the race, it was extremely difficult as when you slide so much in the corners, you kill the tires, so you have two problems.”
“You don’t have the pace, plus you have a lot of degradation, so all in all, it was a very long race for us.”
Additionally, expressing his frustration, he urged the Silverstone-base team “to work harder, to talk less, and deliver more” in the upcoming rounds. Instructing this, he continued by saying:
“We are missing pure load. It is frustrating but, there is nothing that you can do now.
“But, we cannot get too frustrated. It is time to work harder, to talk less and deliver more.”
Alonso says upcoming race is ‘going to be painful as well’ as team ‘haven’t delivered the results’
In Barcelona, the AMR24 struggled greatly in the high-speed long corners of the racetrack. Noting this, he also feared that the upcoming Austrian and British Grands Prix at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone would be as equally “painful” as upgrades fail to deliver the intended boost. Continuing his speech, he further added:
“You start thinking about Austria immediately after the checkered flag and what you can do differently, but, I think it is going to be painful as well.”
“It has some characteristics of Barcelona with the long corners and high-speed sections, so it will be tough, and also at Silverstone.”
“We’ve been upgrading the car a lot, but we haven’t delivered the results, so now it is a matter of whatever we bring to the track, it delivers what we expect, and we will start to get better and better.”
“We need to work hard, get better every race but without too much talk or over-promising.”
As things stand, Fernando Alonso is now sitting at P9 in the 2024 Driver Standings. Meanwhile, Aston Martin is down to P5 in the Constructor Standings of the 2024 F1 season.
For his next challenge, the two-time F1 Champion will take out his AMR24 at the Red Bull Ring for the 2024 Austrian GP. The racing event will be this season’s Round 11- scheduled to take place between 28th to 30th June.
