2024 Canadian GP Trophy: F1’s First AI-Designed Award

After developing the ‘next-gen’ 2022 car, Formula 1 is again joining forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS) this weekend. This time, the partnership is debuting the first-ever generative AI-inspired F1 award- the 2024 Canadian GP trophy.

Before the curtain rises on Sunday, here’s everything that you need to know about this AI-designed trophy.

2024 Canadian GP trophy to become F1’s first-ever AI-generated award

Formula 1 partnered with AWS back in 2018 to optimize its ‘data-collecting’ power both on and off the track. The next-generation 2022 F1 car was the first fruitful result of this innovative collaboration. The popular F1 Insights – a key aspect of the broadcast production – became the second development that saw daylight.

Now, as the partnership continues to grow, Formula 1 will introduce generative AI through AWS tools. As an example of this innovation, AWS-Title Partner of this weekend’s 2024 Canadian GP-will debut the first-ever generative AI-inspired F1 trophy.

In an official statement, Emily Prazer, who is F1’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized on this ‘innovative partnership’ with AWS. Reflecting on this collaboration, he added:

“For over six years, AWS has been an invaluable partner, revolutionising the use of data to enhance how we operate across the sport. Our worlds continue to merge as we look to game-changing technologies, like generative AI, to elevate both the on-track competition and off-track experience for fans.”

“AWS’s commitment to innovation enables us to help push the sport forward and we’re excited to see the first-ever generative AI-inspired trophy on display in Canada this weekend and give fans the opportunity to showcase their love for F1 through the design of their own trophy.”

Moreover, Neil Ralph, AWS’ Principal Sports Industry Specialist, added that this collaboration is “redefining the way the sport is watched, raced, and managed“. Explaining it, he quoted:

“Formula 1 cars generate more than a million data points per second and that’s just the start.  F1 captures additional data on the drivers, circuits, weather, and the amazing history of F1 itself. At the core of our partnership is the ability to extract valuable insights from all of this data.”

“With AWS’s generative AI capabilities, F1 will elevate its storytelling as historic data is effortlessly analysed alongside real-time events to engage fans with more dynamic and timely commentary. Together, we are redefining the way the sport is watched, raced and managed.”

As for now, neither Formula 1 nor AWS has released the final images of the AI-inspired F1 trophy. However, AWS explained how they used AI tools in its design.

AWS designed the trophy by ‘blending generative AI inspiration, traditional design and British craftsmanship’

An AWS team of designers drafted hundreds of trophy design concepts based on various prompts, using Amazon’s Titan Image Generator. As specific prompts were promising, the team generated hundreds of further iterations on preferred designs.

The most promising designs came from prompts inspired by the next-gen F1 car project from 2022. The input had the following prompt:

“A sleek, aerodynamic silver trophy on a square marble base, its twisted airflow form resembling the intricate aerodynamic patterns around a Formula 1 race car. The trophy’s design incorporates swirls and vortices, symbolizing the complex simulations run on AWS, used in F1 car development. The background is a muted grey, with subtle motion blur effects to convey a sense of speed.”

As expected, the prompt generated hundreds of variations in just a few seconds. Some of these design options are as the following:

After initial reviews, the ultimate design showcased a ‘futuristic-looking’ trophy with a large base and sharp edges in silverish hues. Its middle part carries a golden, egg-shaped object, held by the curved spikes on the side. Then, a British silversmith brought the final design to life.

Surprisingly, this AI-design concept is used on all four trophies: 1st Place Driver, 2nd Place Driver, 3rd Place Driver, and Winning Constructor’s Trophy. The trophy can only be seen in the aftermath of Sunday’s race at the legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
