Oscar Piastri is confident about the potential of the McLaren coming into Canadian Grand Prix. Bringing upgrades in Miami, McLaren took huge strides in closing the gap to both Ferrari and Red Bull. Clinching a maiden win for Norris and Putting Piastri in second on the streets of Monte-Carlo.

Piastri admitted, despite being in a stronger position the last few races, “Monaco was the first time we got a really strong result of it.”

In Miami, he was on track for a podium before an ill-timed safety car and contact with the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, which effectively ended his race.

In Imola, he was just out of reach of the podium finishing fourth. When Piastri was asked what the key to his better performances has been. He admitted it was “just a confidence thing.”

“I feel like I’ve taken a good step forward in quite a few areas from last year.”

Last time out in Montréal, the Australian driver qualified ninth and finished 11th. He made it clear he is expecting more this time round. “I think we can be pretty confident that we’ll be somewhere in the mix, which is pretty exciting to say.”

Piastri also talked about how hard it is to figure out who may come out on top from weekend to weekend, “I don’t know if we’ll be the favourites, but I don’t really know who you can say are the favourites at the moment.”

This grid closeness is something that has become clearer over the past few weekends. With four different winners in eight races. A far cry from last season where we only saw three different winners, the entire season.

For McLaren, this season also represented a tremendous change from last. The beginning of 2023 saw McLaren barely in the fight for points. Now McLaren find themselves in the fight for wins.

Piastri confessed it is ‘exciting’ to be fighting at the front, even more exciting as a “win is on the cards.”

The McLaren driver also talked about how it’s ‘nicer’ to know that you’re going into a weekend fighting for a win rather than just a single point. He joked, “I think we all know which position we’d rather choose.”

Though we are yet to see who will be on the best foot for the Canadian Grand Prix, do doubt it will be a three-way fight between the Red Bulls, Ferraris and the McLarens.
