The McLaren driver was injured during a crash at Sainte Devote, where he made contact with the barriers causing the steering wheel to snap back on him.

The British driver immediately grabbed at his had once he was out of the stricken McLaren.

McLaren released a statement regarding the situation:

Following his on-track incident, there are signs of a potential hand injury, which needs to be further medical attention.

“Sam will be going to the hospital for an x-ray to help clarify the nature of the injury. As a result, and pending approval by the FIA, Taylor Barnard will be stepping in for Sam for the remainder of the event, driving the #8 car for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.

“The team are already preparing the #8 car ready in time for FP2 following the damage. Further updates will be provided via the team when these become available.”

Although it has not been confirmed, the way that the steering wheel ‘snapped back’ on the driver has seen injuries such as broken wrists and hands. With Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo missing several races due to a similar incident at the Dutch GP
