The Miami GP had all the ingredients to produce a classic, however the final product was just ok.
With some drivers out of position, the Miami GP could have served up a classic Formula 1 race, however it may not have been the classic we al hoped for, but it was a decent enough race even if the end result was pretty obvious.
IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME FOR MAX
Max Verstappen, who had been caught out by Charles LeClerc’s Red flag in Qualifying, started the Miami GP in ninth, the 2 time world champion started to dispatch his competitors with frightening efficiency, he was up to third by lap 14.
Verstappen would take the lead when his teammate, Perez would head to the pits to move onto the medium tire, during this time, Max would build up a solid lead, keeping him in striking distance of Perez after his one and only pit stop.
Strike he did, he resumed the race less than a second behind Perez and finally past him on lap 47. It was a pretty straight forward pass for Max. The Dutchman headed off to the chequered flag with a 5 second buffer to Sergio.
It will be hard to bet against Max Verstappen becoming a 3 time World Champion in 2023.
Rest of the Field
Fernando Alonso, would take his now customary third place and his fourth podium in five races. Russell and Carlos Sainz would follow behind the Aston Martin. Charles Leclerc struggled for the majority of the race, stuck in the midfield, however he would drag his Ferrari into seventh place, Carlos Sainz would take fifth in a somewhat disappointing race for the Ferrari.
Mercedes fight on Mercedes did grab some points but will not be happy with their lack of pace against Redbull and Alonso in the Aston Martin. Lewis Hamilton, who started in thirteenth managed a solid sixth with Russell taking fourth. The final result for Mercedes is probably the best they could have hoped for, however they will still not be satisfied with their lack of pace compared to Redbull and Aston Martin.
McLaren Struggles continue
McLaren’s struggles continued from qualifying in to the race with the papaya drivers finishing down the order and out of the points. Lando Norris was tapped by the Alpha Tauri of DeVries at the start that pushed him down the order. Unfortunately he did not have the pace to make any meaningful progress, crossing the line in 17th, Oscar Piastri would take the chequered flag in 19th, the rookie was struggling with a long break pedal for majority of the race.
Dutch Delight but Mundane Miami?
Was the Miami Grand Prix boring? Well no red flags, no yellow flags, no safety cars and no rain !!!! The race was brewing for a few laps, but it soon became clear that it would be a race by numbers, the expected Redbull “battle” did was over in a whimper. Everyone finished in arguably where they should have.
Arguably the race was a decent Formula 1 race, not memorable, definitely not a classic, just well decent. It could have been much worse!
