Johnny Herbert Discusses a Lewis Hamilton Move to Ferrari

Is a Move to Ferrari on the cards for Lewis Hamilton?

It’s no secret that seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been less than satisfied by the Mercedes cars’ performance over the past two seasons. The British driver has made it clear that he is seeking that eighth title, leading to speculation that a Lewis Hamilton move to Ferrari could be on the cards.

In an interview with Standard Sport, former British racing driver Johnny Herbert looked at the possible options for Hamilton, given Mercedes’ performance and reliability issues. He claimed that Mercedes 2023 development was key:

“Can they turn it around? If that doesn’t work and Lewis still has the fire in his belly and thinks this is not the place for him where does he go?”

Christian Horner has said that they couldn’t accommodate Hamilton at Red Bull, so the other top team would be Ferrari. Herbert said a Lewis Hamilton move to Ferarri could be possible:

“Would he go to Ferrari? Does he want to go there as he feels that’s where he gets a Championship?”

An issue with a Ferrari move could be that Hamilton would have to rebuild there, and he might not have time to do that.

“Would he feel he could take his energy and people from Mercedes there like Michael Schumacher did and actually change and steer it in a positive way?”, said Herbert, adding, “The problem with that is time.”

Herbert suggested that further obstacles to that eighth title might be Lewis’s lack of confidence on the simulator: “It adds a sixth sense”, he proposed. Not only that but George Russell, Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate “has been able to challenge him and put him under a lot of pressure.” The competition for championships is tight, and Herbert finished by suggesting that “George is going to be tough for Max Verstappen when he gets the right car. I think Lando Norris is the same given the right car.”

There is a lot of support for Hamilton in his fight to become the all-time highest Formula 1 World Driver Champion, but the barriers to achieving this might be more complicated than a move to Ferrari.
