Richard Verschoor has had a complicated F2 season thus far that has neither lived up to his expectations nor highlighted his true potential.

Richard Verschoor was stripped of his F2 sprint race victory for the second time this season at the Hungarian Grand Prix in what is shaping up to be a complicated season for him. It was revealed that his Trident car failed scrutineering.

This was also the fifth time he has been disqualified in F2 due to a technical non-conformity, and the fourth time he has lost a podium for it. In Jeddah he was stripped of a similar sprint race victory for using an incorrect throttle pedal progressivity map.

He partially redeemed himself in the Hungarian feature race, placing P3 behind Martins and Antonelli. However, when asked in a press conference about this drive, he did not seem too pleased with his result.

“I’m just waiting, because you never know, with me. Let me pull away quickly after that first safety car.

“I could also feel that I had less pace than yesterday, really, because we were so low yesterday, getting so much advantage. I’m just joking. But then I saw behind me that the cars couldn’t really keep up.

“So I was like, OK, maybe it’s just him or one of the few cars that are really flying. Of course, in the beginning, the strategy was better with the safety car. In the beginning, they had a first stop, and then we had a first stop in the end.

“So, yeah, in the end, of course, I’m very happy to be on the podium, but let’s wait and see.”

Disappointment

While he was happy to be on the feature race podium, he revealed his upset at yet another disqualification.

When asked what went through his mind when he received the news, he shared,“I wasn’t angry at my, well, no, I wasn’t angry, but I was just disappointed. Disappointed because, you know, it’s not the first time, it’s the third time I think that I got disqualified after a run. So when I, the good thing was I wasn’t really happy after the race, so the dip afterwards was not so big.”

During a season where proving himself is paramount, Verschoor is 15th in the driver standings. Had he not faced disqualifications, he would have easily been in the top 10 amongst top competitors.

However, there appears to be no blame at his team’s door. While, in his words, “it’s another win, another trophy that you cannot bring home, another points scoring position that you cannot bring home,” he made it clear that despite the “tough season,” he “will never give up on [his] team.”

“Of course, I’m very proud of them.”

“Tough One to Swallow”

Despite the disqualifications faced, Verschoor is excited for Spa this upcoming weekend. He believes himself and his team “will keep pushing” as the sprint race was “not a day where we do those kind of things on purpose.

“And it was 0.3 millimeters that the plank was too thin. So you cannot, yeah, it was a mistake. Of course, it’s a tough one to swallow, but sometimes it’s motorsport.”
