From a very young age, Ugo Ugochukwu made a name for himself in motorsport. At just seven years old Ugochukwu won the Mkro ROK Cup in the US, his home country. He then went on to win many more Karting championships on his journey to the big leagues in Europe. With a stellar record giving him the confidence he needed, in 2022 Ugochukwu made the leap to single-seater racing. After winning British F4 with Carlin Racing (now Rodin Motorsport) he joined one of the most successful junior formula racing teams, PREMA Racing.

With PREMA’s support, Ugochukwu won many championships over three years. He became a Euro 4 champion in 2023, racing in and coming second and third in Italian F4 and F4 UAE, respectively. In 2024, Ugochukwu made his debut in the esteemed Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA). Whilst he didn’t make the strongest impression in his rookie year after finishing the season in 11th, he didn’t end the year trophyless.
Macau Grand Prix Champion
In November, on the infamously difficult streets of Macau, Ugochukwu became a Macau Grand Prix champion. And he did it with style. Taking first place in all three sessions, Ugochukwu stormed past his competitors to declare himself the 2024 champion. The Macau Grand Prix is one of the toughest tests for junior drivers due to the narrow and difficult roads they have to battle through. So it is a true testament to the driver’s skills if they can call themselves a winner at this track. Historically, many podium sitters at the Macau Grand Prix have made their way into F1 seats. Some include recent F1 graduates Lando Norris and Logan Sergeant, and legends Michael Schumacher and Aryton Senna. Hopefully, this means one day we could see Ugochukwu in a seat at the pinnacle of motorsport.
McLaren Junior Driver
Despite his impeccable racing record, it was his karting record that caught the eye of McLaren CEO Zak Brown. After winning the 2020 FIA OK-Junior European Karting Championship title, Zak Brown recruited Ugochukwu to be a McLaren junior driver. At the time McLaren believed they had a strong driver lineup in F1 and thus no drivers were recruited for the junior program. However, it is clear that Ugochukwu made a strong impression on Brown, inspiring him to recruit the young driver in 2021.

Formula E
As part of the McLaren Driver Programme, Ugochukwu got the opportunity to drive a Formula E car in 2024. In May of last year, the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team announced that Ugochukwu and Grégoire Saucy would take part in the Official Rookie test at the Berlin ePrix. When asked by Formula E Media prior to the Berlin ePrix, Ugochukwu stated he was excited to race in a new series.
“I’m excited to learn and develop my driving further with a new category of car.”
Even though it isn’t a Formula 1 seat, any form of racing will always excite junior drivers whose focus is on improving their driving skills.
Post-Season F3 Testing
In 2023, Ugochukwu took part in three Post-Season tests with Rodin Motorsport at Jerez, Barcelona and Imola. Most recently he was able to take part in the post-season tests in 2024 with PREMA Racing. He finished both test days in Jerez in the top ten in the morning sessions. He also went on to finish sixth on day one of testing in Barcelona. However, regardless of the amount of testing that he has done in an F3 car, it will be a whole new challenge for everyone as the teams grapple with new car specs for the 2025 season.
With the debut of the new F3 car in 2025 it will be exciting to see which seasoned drivers will thrive in the new racing conditions as the new car provides an evening playing field. As we look forward to this season we can’t help but wonder what will come of Ugochukwu’s rookie F3 campaign. Will he have a standout rookie season or will he struggle to get a handle on driving a Formula 3 car?
