Africa’s F1 Comeback

The continent has long been absent from the F1 calendar, but the appetite for a return has been growing. South Africa is also keen to host again, with refurbishment planned for Kyalami to meet FIA Grade 1 standards. Meanwhile, Rwanda’s ambitious bid is turning heads.

“I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 grand prix.”

The Role of Lewis Hamilton and the Rwanda F1 Race Bid

Lewis Hamilton, a vocal supporter of an African Grand Prix, has been involved in discussions with organisers in both South Africa and Rwanda. His influence could play a pivotal role in securing Africa’s spot on the F1 map.

A Unique Rwandan Circuit

Rwanda’s proposed track will be located near Bugesera International Airport, just outside Kigali. This state-of-the-art facility is being designed by Alexander Wurz, a former F1 driver and head of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association.

The hilly terrain surrounding the site will add a unique dimension to the circuit, potentially making it one of the most visually striking on the calendar. President Kagame expressed gratitude to F1’s leadership, adding

“A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at F1 for the good progress in our discussions so far. I assure you we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves.”

Looking Ahead

Construction of Bugesera International Airport began in 2017 and is expected to finish by 2026. This timeline aligns well with Rwanda’s ambitions to secure a spot on the F1 schedule.

If successful, the Rwanda F1 Race Bid could mark the beginning of a new era for motorsport in Africa, bringing global attention to the continent’s potential.
