George Russell commented on the upgrades they saw in Miami. As well as the hopes, coming into Imola.
Russell admitted, “right now in Formula one it is so difficult to know where it’s going to fall,” he recognised, “You know Red Bull’s going to be at the front, fighting for wins.”
Below Red Bull, Russell shared some positivity on the closeness of the grid, “Between the three next teams, Aston Martin seems up and down. You really can’t say.”
After back-to-back Sprint Weekends, Russell admitted he was ‘glad’ it was a normal race weekend, allowing teams and drivers to focus more on the setup of the car. Instead of setting up on Friday and hoping for the best.
“It will allow us to build up“
The process of regaining the lead won’t be quick for Mercedes, as they have been open about their struggles this season. After struggling with Sim data, not matching track data. As well as an inconsistent operating window.
Although the Mercedes upgrades in Miami saw more performance in the W15. Enabling Hamilton to fight on track with the surrounding cars.
Hamilton confessed, “I wouldn’t say it’s depressing, it’s just a patience game. Making do with what you have.”
The seven-time world champion remained optimistic, describing the feedback from the factory as ‘encouraging’ and acknowledging, “we are seeing progress in the wind tunnel.”
He continued to say figuring out what works is ‘exciting’. Praising the fact the team now has a direction for the team to move in. In light of this, Hamilton described the feeling back at Brackley as “all hands on deck.”
In the main race at Miami, Lewis Hamilton found himself behind Sergio Perez. At time even faster than the Red Bull driver. Hamilton hailed the set up changes made between the Sprint and the Race.
The brit agreed with his teammate, saying the sprint race hindered them with only one session of running before the weekend began.
This weekend will see them have more time to figure out the car and hopefully see Mercedes take a step forward.
