The DeVries Problem

Redbull decided to swoop for DeVries after his super-sub performance at the 2022 Italian GP where he replace Alex Albon at the last minute and finished in ninth. The former Formula E champion was reportedly looking over several offers for a full time race seat following that appearance. Nyck would take up the Redbull/Alpha Tauri offer to partner Yuki Tsunoda for the 2023 season.

Unfortunately for Nyck and Redbull, it hasn’t been a great season. The Dutchman has been struggling to adapt to Formula 1 and has been consistently beaten by his teammate throughout the first part of the season. Due to this perceived lack of performance, the rumours of his imminent sacking began to gain pace, it would seem that the rumours and speculation are about to reach a crescendo and that he will be replaced in time for the Hungarian GP in 10 days time.

The British GP may be the last time that Nyck is at an F1 track this season

Danny Ricciardo’s return

When Danny was released by McLaren after 2 underwhelming years and picked up by Redbull, speculation began that he was there to put pressure on Sergio Perez, however it would seem that the pressure was on Nyck.

If the decision to put Danny into the Alpha Tauri is confirmed, it will be an interesting decision as Danny turned down drives at lower ranked teams prior to the 2023 season, he will now be in a car that is fighting with HAAS to be last.

Is Danny Heading to Alpha Tauri?

A positive for Ricciardo is that if he jumps into the car and sticks it into Q2 or Q3 then the decision would be seen as a masterstroke, however if he takes to the track and qualifies in 17th and behind Tsunoda, what will that do to Danny Ricciardo’s stock as a driver?

Unfortunately for Nyck DeVries he has become another victim of the ruthless nature of Redbull and Helmut Marko.
