Sainz was due to start the feature race at the Lusail International Circuit in P12 after a difficult Friday.
Ferrari confirmed, with less than an hour before lights out, that his car has fuel system issues. He will not be ready in time to join the grid.
Carlos is chasing down his compatriot, Fernando Alonso, for P4 in the championship. This will be a disappointing result for him and the team.
Ferrari’s hopes now rest on Leclerc’s shoulders, who starts P5.
The soft compound tyre struggled in the Sprint race and new FIA regulations making a 3-stop race mandatory. Ferrari might struggle to see a Scuderia on the top step of the Qatar podium. Both McLaren boys are on form (with Piastri securing his first ever win yesterday). Hamilton’s late race pace is surely something the Tifosi are concerned about, too.
Sainz will continue his charge for P4 in the championship in two weeks at the US Grand Prix. Despite being the pole sitter in 2022, his race was abruptly ended due to an incident at Turn 1 with Mercedes’ George Russell.
