Pierre Gasly has been disqualified from the 2024 Azerbaijan GP Quali session after his car was found to breach the technical regulations.
Gasly’s Alpine was found to have ‘exceeded the instantaneous fuel mass flow’, and the French outfit were summoned to the Stewards earlier today. It has now been announced that the Number 10 car has been disqualified from the session, meaning he will start from the back of the grid for tomorrow’s race.
The disqualification adds to an already poor weekend for Alpine. Gasly’s teammate Esteban Ocon has had a less-than-ideal start to his weekend. The Frenchman failed to set a timed lap in FP1 due to a power issue, finished in P19 in FP2 after complaining of no traction, and caused a red flag in the third practice after stopping on track with an issue. In Qualifying, Ocon classified in dead last – although he won’t start there tomorrow.
Zhou Guanyu will take a ten-place grid penalty for installing a third Energy Store and third Control Electronics to his Sauber, taking the Chinese driver over the two-element limit for the season. Ocon will also now start ahead of Gasly, who, as he has been disqualified from the Azerbaijan GP Quali session, will lose his P13 spot on the grid and leave him at the back of the pack for the race.
