Ollie Goethe, the talented 19-year-old German driver, has had an unexpected promotion to the FIA Formula 2 championship. He will be stepping in to replace Franco Colapinto.

The Logan Sargeant, Williams saga had many knock on effects in the feeder categories. With Colapinto moving up to F1, Goethe got the call up to join the Formula 2 grid for the rest of 2024.

Goethe’s performance in Formula 3 this season has been nothing short of impressive. The German managed to claim victory in Imola, alongside two other podiums and a remarkable 12-race point-scoring streak. This ultimately helped him to be in the title fight for the coveted F3 title. Unfortunately, his promotion to F2 comes at the cost of an early conclusion to his F3 campaign.
Goethe has since reflected on his mixed feelings stating,
“I am a bit sad that I can’t finish my F3 season as planned. I would have loved to go out with a bang with my Campos Racing team. Huge thanks to Adrian Campos and the entire Campos squad for everything.”

Lack of Experince in Formula 2
Goethe’s Formula 2 debut comes ten rounds into the 2024 season. This is a daunting task alone, but its exaggerated due to his lack of experience in the new Formula 2 car. However, the Red Bull prodigy is ready to face this challenge head on stating
“My goals for this weekend are to soak up all the information MP Motorsport provides me with and learn as much as I can. It won’t be easy even on a track I know well because all my competitors have so much more experience than me,”

The MP Motorsports driver further highlighted the difficulties of this sudden transition. He compared it to his successful F3 debut in which he scored points on debut,
“I got the call so late that I didn’t have a chance to do simulator prep for F2, but in some way, this is similar to my FIA F3 debut in 2022, where I joined the series mid-season and scored points on my first attempt.”
Goethe has demonstrated his talent in feeder series and is certain to make the most of this opportunity. Having just four rounds left in the Formula 2 championship, Goethe will be keen to make his mark on the championship, to secure a potential 2025 seat.
