Chinese GP: Norris Clinches Sprint Pole Ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen

The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix marked its return to the Shanghai International Circuit with an intense Sprint Qualifying session under varied weather conditions. The new format, featuring a Sprint race on Saturday, began with qualifying rounds on Friday. The weather played a significant role, impacting tyre choices and driving strategies.

In the 12-minute SQ1 session, drivers started on medium tyres. The session saw Zhou Guanyu being the first to hit the track, signalling the onset of light rain which affected track conditions.

Alex Albon set an early pace with a time of 1:38.043s, quickly surpassed by Zhou and Charles Leclerc, who entered the 1:37s and 1:36s respectively.

The session saw intense competition, with Sergio Perez capturing the lead with a lap of 1:36.110s, edging out teammate Max Verstappen.

However, Lando Norris of McLaren made a significant impact, slotting in just below the Red Bull drivers with a time of 1:36.384s.

The session concluded with a yellow flag due to a minor track incident.

Eliminated in SQ1: Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda, and Logan Sargeant.

SQ2: The Challenge Intensifies

As the rain intensified, teams switched to intermediate tyres for the 10-minute SQ2. Norris initially led with a strong lap, soon overtaken by Leclerc and then Verstappen, demonstrating rapid pace adjustments to the worsening conditions.

Notable drivers such as George Russell and Kevin Magnussen failed to advance, hindered by the wet track.

Eliminated in SQ2: George Russell, Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg, Daniel Ricciardo, and Lance Stroll.

SQ3: The Battle for Pole

In the final segment, conditions were considerably wetter, compelling all drivers to continue on intermediate tyres. The session was marked by several incidents, including spins by Norris and Leclerc. Despite the challenges, Norris posted a fast lap which was initially deleted for exceeding track limits but later reinstated, allowing him to claim pole position.

Fernando Alonso managed to outpace other competitors, securing a strong starting position for Aston Martin by finishing third. Hamilton initially claimed the fastest time before Norris’s lap was reinstated.
