Friday at the Circuit of the Americas delivered drama, speed, and early indicators of the competitive order, as Pedro Acosta topped FP1 while Marc Márquez recovered from a heavy crash to end the day fastest overall.

With changing track conditions and limited margins, the opening day of the American GP set the stage for a tightly contested weekend.

Acosta Leads FP1 as Marquez Crash Triggers Red Flag

The first session of the weekend saw Acosta immediately on the pace, putting his KTM at the top of the timesheets early on and maintaining that advantage as the session unfolded.

However, the headline moment came courtesy of Márquez, who suffered a high-speed crash at Turn 10 that brought out the red flag. The reigning World Champion lost control at significant speed, briefly halting the session as marshals cleared the track.

Despite the severity of the incident, Márquez walked away and later returned to the circuit — a clear statement of resilience at one of his strongest tracks.

Behind Acosta, the timesheets remained competitive, with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jorge Martín among those running near the front, highlighting the depth of competition early in the weekend.

Márquez Responds to Top Friday Times

If FP1 was about Acosta, the remainder of Friday belonged to Márquez.

In the afternoon session, the Spaniard responded emphatically, setting the fastest time of the day and reasserting his authority at a circuit where he has historically excelled. His ability to bounce back after a crash underlined both his confidence and the underlying pace of the Ducati package.

Close behind, Ai Ogura impressed by emerging as one of the nearest challengers, continuing a strong run of form and signalling Aprilia’s competitiveness once again. Margins at the front remained incredibly tight, with multiple riders separated by just fractions of a second.

Tight Battle for Q2 Spots

Beyond the fight for top honours, Friday’s sessions carried added importance due to the battle for automatic Q2 qualification.

Several big names found themselves under pressure as the timesheets evolved rapidly, with late improvements proving decisive. Riders were forced to manage traffic, track evolution, and tyre strategy in order to secure a place inside the crucial top positions.

The competitiveness of the midfield meant that even small mistakes or missed opportunities could prove costly heading into Saturday.

Setbacks and Storylines Across the Grid

Friday wasn’t without its setbacks.

One of the major developments saw Maverick Viñales withdraw from the weekend due to an ongoing shoulder issue, marking an early blow for KTM Tech3 and reshaping the grid for the remainder of the event.

Elsewhere, several riders experienced moments of instability on a demanding COTA layout, with track conditions continuing to evolve throughout the day and catching out even the most experienced competitors.

All to Play for Heading into Saturday

With Acosta setting the early benchmark and Márquez finishing Friday on top, the competitive picture remains finely balanced.

Márquez’s recovery positions him as a clear favourite heading into qualifying, but the likes of Acosta, Di Giannantonio, and Martín have already shown they have the pace to challenge.

As always at COTA, unpredictability remains a key factor, and if Friday was any indication, the fight for pole and Sprint honours is set to be intense.
