The MotoGP paddock returned to the legendary TT Circuit Assen with an eventful opening day, and it was Marco Bezzecchi who emerged as Friday’s benchmark. After bouncing back from a difficult previous round, the Aprilia rider topped both FP1 and Practice to head into Saturday with momentum firmly on his side.
Behind him, the field remained incredibly close, with several manufacturers showing competitive pace while a late red flag added extra drama to the crucial Practice session.
Bezzecchi leads the way in FP1
Aprilia made an immediate statement in the opening session as Bezzecchi set the fastest lap of FP1 with a strong 1:32.311. The Italian looked comfortable throughout the session and immediately established himself as one of the riders to beat.
Francesco Bagnaia finished second for Ducati Lenovo, while reigning World Champion Jorge Martín continued Aprilia’s encouraging start by ending FP1 in third.
Elsewhere, championship contender Marc Márquez crashed at Turn 15 during FP1 but was able to re-join the session and recover to tenth by the chequered flag.
Practice delivers drama and a close fight for Q2
As track conditions improved in the afternoon, lap times tumbled and the battle for the automatic Q2 places intensified.
Bezzecchi once again proved untouchable, improving his pace to remain fastest and complete a clean sweep of Friday’s sessions. Raúl Fernández continued his impressive form by finishing second for Trackhouse Aprilia, while Pedro Acosta secured third with a late flying lap for KTM.
A late red flag, triggered after a heavy crash for Álex Márquez, left riders with little time to improve. When the session resumed, several competitors had just one final opportunity to secure a place in Q2, creating a frantic finish to the day. Fortunately, Álex Márquez walked away from the incident.
Bagnaia managed to produce a crucial final lap to comfortably book his place in Q2, while Marc Márquez also recovered from his earlier difficulties to progress directly into Saturday’s pole shootout. Ai Ogura also featured near the top of the timesheets for much of the session before ultimately securing a place inside the automatic Q2 positions, continuing another encouraging weekend for Trackhouse.
Not everyone enjoyed a productive Friday. Fabio Quartararo, Álex Rins and Enea Bastianini all missed out on the automatic Q2 places, with Bastianini particularly frustrated after encountering traffic on his final flying lap. They will now face the added challenge of progressing through Q1 on Saturday morning.
Everything to play for on Saturday
Friday belonged to Bezzecchi and Aprilia, but the gaps at the front remain small. Ducati, KTM and Trackhouse all showed race-winning pace, while the late red flag demonstrated just how quickly fortunes can change around Assen.
With qualifying and the Sprint still to come, the stage is set for another fiercely contested Dutch Grand Prix weekend at Assen.
