Marc Márquez delivered another clinical performance at MotorLand Aragón, converting second on the grid into victory in Saturday’s Tissot Sprint. The Ducati Lenovo rider made his move immediately at Turn 1, passing polesitter Marco Bezzecchi before holding off his brother Álex Márquez for the remainder of the 11-lap contest.
Álex secured second, while Bezzecchi recovered to third after losing the lead at the opening corner. Behind them, Pedro Acosta and Jorge Martín battled throughout the Sprint. And a late fight for the lower points positions kept the action alive until the chequered flag.
Márquez Makes His Move at Turn 1
Bezzecchi made the strongest launch from pole, but his advantage lasted only until the first braking zone.
Marc attacked down the inside at Turn 1 and took the lead, with Álex using the momentum around the outside to move into second. The three riders immediately established themselves as the leading group.
Marc began to stretch the gap at the front, while Álex settled into second with Bezzecchi around half a second further back. Despite the pace of the leaders, neither Álex nor Bezzecchi could find a clear opportunity to challenge for position.
Martín and Acosta Fight for Fourth
Further down the order, the battle for fourth provided much of the early drama.
Pedro Acosta initially emerged ahead of Jorge Martín, with Raúl Fernández also involved in the fight. Martín managed to fight his way back past Acosta on Lap 3, but the KTM rider refused to let him escape.
The battle swung back in Acosta’s favour on Lap 5 when Martín ran wide at the final corner, allowing the KTM rider to retake fourth.
Acosta then began closing the gap to Bezzecchi in the closing stages. The KTM rider appeared to have enough pace to potentially challenge for the final podium position, but the race distance ran out before he could make a move.
Late Drama Decides the Midfield
The fight for the lower points-paying positions went right down to the final lap.
Fermín Aldeguer made his move on Diogo Moreira late in the Sprint to take sixth, while Moreira eventually slipped to seventh.
Raúl Fernández finished eighth, with Johann Zarco making an impressive return to MotoGP action by taking ninth. The Frenchman held off Jack Miller, who completed the top ten.
Fabio Di Giannantonio’s Sprint ended prematurely after the VR46 rider crashed, although he was reported to be OK.
Francesco Bagnaia also endured a difficult afternoon, finishing outside the points in 11th.
Sunday Promises Another Márquez Battle
Saturday’s Sprint has set up another fascinating race at MotorLand Aragón.
Marc Márquez has once again demonstrated his strength at the circuit, while Álex showed that he has the pace to remain within striking distance. Bezzecchi’s podium keeps him firmly in the championship picture, and Acosta’s late charge suggests KTM could also play a role in Sunday’s battle.
For Martín, fifth place means there is still plenty to fight for. With a 29-point advantage at the top of the standings, the championship leader will be hoping to turn Sunday’s longer race into an opportunity to rebuild his advantage.
After an intense 11 laps on Saturday, all eyes now turn to the Grand Prix.
