Following George Russell’s Austrian GP win, the British driver believes that more is to come for Mercedes after the team’s hard work is beginning to show in his and fellow teammate Lewis Hamilton’s race results.

George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after a turn of events during the 67th lap. Race leader Max Verstappen and P2 holder Lando Norris collided, taking the latter out of the race and the former down to P5 with a 10 second penalty.

This incident allowed Russell, in P3, to overtake for the lead. It is his second Grand Prix win following Brazil 2021.

The British driver shared that he thought the race was “Incredible. It was a tough fight out there at the beginning of the race just to hold on to P3. I saw Max and Lando were going pretty hard and I knew Lando would want that win.”

Mercedes have struggled since 2022 with the new regulations that ended their domination period. While they were yet to win a race in this era, they have gained P2 and P3 podiums with both Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

Recent work at Brackley and Brixworth has seen Russell secure Pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix alongside a P3 finish for Hamilton in Spain. With this, the Briton believes, “The team has done an amazing job to put us in this fight. You’ve got to be there to pick up the pieces, and that’s where we were.”

“More to Come”

After a smooth race, he recalled how, “They [Verstappen and Norris] were going for it. I couldn’t believe how close we were to Lando and Max. We were only about 12 seconds behind and I knew it [the collision] was a possibility. You are always dreaming.

“Just so proud to be back on the top step. We have made so many strides since the start of the season. The last few races have been incredible. More to come.”

As we head to Silverstone next week, both Russell and Hamilton will be looking to maximise their results at their home race. With the W15 looking capable of podium finishes, time will tell if being on home soil will place them at an even further advantage.
