Oscar Piastri

After the Australian won rookie of the year in 2021 when driving in F2. It’s no surprise that F1 teams were fighting over his place on the 2023 F1 grid. Piastri was previously Alpines reserve driver, so looked likely for a place there. However, Mclaren were also interested to have the 21 year old driver on their team.

With a legal battle halting other driver deals, there was a confusing timeline on who signed who. It was Mclaren who gained the young driver alongside Lando Norris. But was this the right choice? Mclaren showed several defects during practice and then coined a double DNF on the sunday. The multi-year contract might not be in his favour now.

Nyck De Vries

A controversial participant in the F1 rookie leagues after a successful race in the 2022 season. Due to Albon undergoing surgery for appendicitis, De Vries made his Formula One debut in the Italian GP last year. Managing to score valuable points for Williams, this success was a catalyst for his permanent seat in F1.

The Dutch driver has a long history in motorsport and has had conversations with many different teams, but Alpha Tauri were successful. Offering him a place in the 2023 season with the Red Bull owned team. Many criticised Williams for missing their opportunity to have the 28-year-old driver as part of their team. As he was a major part of their results. (Even though they ended up last in the constructors standings)

Logan Sargeant

The first American driver since 2015, Logan Sargeant has big boots to fill for US fans. Finishing fourth in the 2022 Formula 2 standings, the 22 year old driver proved his ability further in the first race of the season, finishing 12th in Bahrain for Williams. He just missed out on his first points. Although confirming his ability, we also have to reflect upon the vast improvement Williams seems to have gained this year, with Albon securing points in the first race.

Signing just a 1 year contract; if Logan carries on with his success, he will be a very wanted man. With this incredible first race, people are seeing Sargeant as ‘one to watch’ this season.

Thats it, the 3 rookies new to the grid in 2023. Who do you think will be the Rookie of the Year?
