McLaren have today parted ways with Technical Director James Key, after announcing a number of organisational changes.
The team has announced this is a strategic move in the hope to build stronger foundations along with a more innovative Formula 1 team, with the reorganisation being months in the making and coming into play in phases in 2023.

The announced restructure means a move away from a single executive team role overseeing the entire technical operation. McLaren have introduced a Technical Executive Team in its place. This will include three new specialised Technical Director roles, all of which will report to Team Principal Andrea Stella.
Peter Prodromou moves into the role Technical Director, Aerodynamics, using his 32 years of World Championship winning Formula 1 knowledge.
In a return to McLaren, David Sanchez is to become Technical Director, Car Concept and Performance. His return to the team, after a decade at Ferrari, will begin on January 1st 2024. Sanchez expressed his excitement in rejoining the team:
“McLaren has always had an extremely talented group of people and alongside the new infrastructure upgrades coming online this year, we have an exciting prospect ahead that I’m delighted to be a part of.”
Neil Houldey has been promoted to a newly created role titled Technical Director, Engineering and Design. Houldey has been a key McLaren team member since 2006, having grown within the organisation.
Furthermore, Giuseppe Pesce is to be promoted to Director, Aerodynamics and Chief of Staff.
In addition to these changes, Piers Thynne moves to an expanded role of Chief Operating Officer within the Formula 1 team.
Andrea Stella is fully focused and determined on leading McLaren back to the front of the field. The Team Principal said:
“This new structure provides clarity and effectiveness within the team’s technical department and puts us in a strong position to maximise performance, including optimising the new infrastructure upgrades we have coming in 2023.
“Alongside Peter and Neil, I’m delighted to welcome David Sanchez back to the team to complete an experienced and highly specialised Technical Executive team, with the collective aim of delivering greater on-track car performance.
“I’m looking forward to continuing working together with Piers, who will play a fundamental role to define and deliver the plans to create an innovative and effective F1 team.”
Zak Brown has emphasised the importance of building a solid foundation:
“It’s important now that we ensure we have a solid foundation as the next phase of our journey. It has been clear to me for some time that our technical development has not moved at a quick enough pace to match our ambition of returning to the front of the grid”
In further reassurance to supporters, he said:
“These strategic changes ensure the long-term success of the team and are necessary to see McLaren get back to winning ways. We have everything coming into place now with our people and infrastructure and alongside an exciting driver line-up, I’m determined to see McLaren get back to where we should be.”
