Red Bull Racing’s flagship driver Max Verstappen is currently at the pinnacle of Formula 1 racing. He is dominating the current season with a driving style that is both aggressive and controlled.
To date, he has 303 points after the Italian Grand Prix. He is 62 points ahead of Lando Norris. At just 26, he has already won three consecutive world championships (from 2021 to 2023). This confirms his status as one of the finest drivers in the sport’s modern history.

A rapidly expanding career
Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997 in Hasselt, Belgium. Like Jacques Villeneuve, Nico Rosberg or Damon Hill, he grew up in motorsports. His father, Jos Verstappen, was a Formula 1 driver, and his mother, Sophie-Marie Kumpen, a former Belgian karting driver.
Max took a place in a kart at the age of 4, on the circuit of Genk. From then on, he never stopped riding, whether in quad, motocross or even on his PlayStation. In 2005, he made his competitive debut in the local championship of Limburg, Belgium, where he finished runner-up, and in the Dutch junior championship.
In 2006, in the Minimax category, Max won the Rotax Max Challenge Belgium. The following year he continued to shine, winning three of four championships in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2008, he was promoted to the cadet category and became the champion of Belgium. The next year, he moved to KF5 and competed at the Belgian and Dutch championships.
It was in 2010 that Max made his European debut. He won the Bridgestone Cup, and the WSK Euro Series and finished second in the KF3 World Cup. The 2011 season was more difficult, but he still won the WSK Euro Series again. In 2012, he moved to KF2 and expanded his horizons by participating in competitions outside of Europe, such as the SuperNationals in Las Vegas.
In 2014, Max started his career in the single-seater car with a training course in Florida, organized by Ferrari. Other pilots in attendance included Raffaele Marciello, Antonio Fuoco, Tatiana Calderón, Nicholas Latifi and Lance Stroll.
At the Florida Winter Series, Verstappen took three pole positions and two wins. Then he was confirmed for the European Formula 3 championship with the Dutch team Van Amersfoort, the same as his father’s in 1991.
The season began with Esteban Ocon in the lead. However, Verstappen scored a series of victories over the summer to become the Frenchman’s main rival. In the end, he finished third in the championship, 67 points behind Ocon.
His Red Bull debut
Red Bull soon became interested in him. Shortly afterwards, Verstappen joined the Red Bull Junior Team, which trains young talent for F1. On August 19, he was announced as Toro Rosso’s starting driver for the 2015 Formula 1 season.

His young age and limited experience raised doubts, especially with more experienced drivers like Carlos Sainz Jr. and Pierre Gasly already in the program. However, Helmut Marko, head of young talent at Red Bull, defended his choice, speaking of Verstappen’s “extraordinary performance”.
To prepare for his arrival in F1, Max took part in several test sessions at the end of 2014. At the Brazilian Grand Prix, he took the wheel of the Toro Rosso STR9 during free practice. He impressed by setting the sixth fastest time, showing that he was ready to compete with the experienced drivers on his debut.
His rise in Formula 1
Max Verstappen entered Formula 1 in 2015 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest driver to compete in a Grand Prix. In his first race in Melbourne, he qualified twelfth. He showed promising potential but was forced to retire on lap 34 due to a mechanical problem. In Sepang, he qualified sixth and, at 17 years and 180 days, became the youngest driver to score points by finishing seventh.
During the season, Verstappen had some difficulties with Toro Rosso. He retired several times, notably in China and Bahrain, due to mechanical problems. However, he shone at the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing fourth, which put him 11th in the championship at the summer break. By the end of the season, he had scored 49 points, finishing 12th in the standings, ahead of team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. This enabled him to extend his contract with Toro Rosso.
In 2016, Verstappen was promoted to Red Bull Racing. On May 5, he replaced Daniil Kvyat ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. In his first race with Red Bull, he won the Spanish Grand Prix, becoming the youngest F1 winner at 18. He went on to perform well, finishing second in Austria and on the podium in Germany. However, his on-track actions provoked controversy, particularly in Belgium.
He finished the season in fifth place in the championship with 204 points, reinforcing his reputation as a young talent.
In 2017, Verstappen continued to distinguish himself, but with ups and downs. He started the season with several retirements but claimed his second victory in Malaysia on his 20th birthday. Max also finished second in the United States and regularly scored points. He finished the season in sixth place in the championship with 168 points.
In 2018, after a difficult start with a retirement in Bahrain, Verstappen rediscovered his form. He scored several podiums, notably in Monaco and Canada, and two victories. He finished fourth in the championship with 249 points. His season was marked by an incident with Esteban Ocon in Brazil, which cost him victory.
These years confirmed Verstappen’s talent, positioning him among F1’s best young drivers.
His six previous seasons
In 2019 and 2020, he continued to impress. He gave Honda its first podium since his return by finishing third in Australia. In Austria, he took his first win of the season. The 2020 season was a difficult one, marked by retirements, but he still managed several podiums and a win in Styria.

In 2021, Verstappen won his first World Championship title after an intense season. He started with a win in Imola and followed this up with podiums in Monaco and France. His duel with Lewis Hamilton ended in Abu Dhabi, where he took advantage of a safety car to win the title.
In 2022, Verstappen continued his domination, with victories in Saudi Arabia, Miami, Belgium and Italy. He claimed his second world title after a win in Japan and ended the season with a record 15 victories.
In 2023, Verstappen confirmed his champion status. He won his first Grand Prix with pole position and victory. In Jeddah, he started 15th after a technical problem but finished second. He went on to win in Australia, Miami, Monaco and Austria, surpassing Ayrton Senna in the number of podiums. After wins in Hungary and Belgium, he equalled Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine consecutive victories. By winning at Monza, he became the first driver to win ten consecutive races.
Verstappen won his third world title at the Qatar Grand Prix. In Austin, he scored his 50th victory, and at the Mexican Grand Prix, he broke the record for most wins in a single season with 16. He also set records for laps led and kilometres covered in a single season.
His 2024 season
After an encouraging test campaign, Max Verstappen started the season with enthusiasm. At the inaugural Grand Prix in Bahrain, he won the fifth grand slam of his career. In Jeddah, he secured his thirty-fourth pole position. He became the seventh driver to reach 100 F1 podiums.
At the Australian Grand Prix, a brake problem ended his run of 43 consecutive races in the points. He followed this up with a fifth consecutive pole in Japan and a quiet victory. In China, he won for the first time in Shanghai, then finished second in Miami.
He won the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix despite tyre problems. In Montreal, he scored his sixtieth success. In Spain, he won after overtaking Lando Norris and beating George Russell.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, a tussle with Norris resulted in a puncture for both drivers, but Verstappen finished fifth. After a second-place finish in Great Britain, he had mixed results in Hungary and Belgium. Finally, he finished second at his home Grand Prix and sixth at Monza after a difficult weekend.

Red Bull Racing: Wins and Discipline
Red Bull Racing was founded in 2005 following the acquisition of the Jaguar Racing team. The team quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic in Formula 1 history. In 2006, Red Bull began with a driver duo, David Coulthard and Christian Klien. Initial results were modest, but the team was already showing promising potential.
The real turning point came in 2009. Red Bull won its first Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championship title with Sebastian Vettel. At the age of 23, Vettel became the youngest-ever world champion. Under the leadership of engineer Adrian Newey, Red Bull developed innovative cars. Between 2010 and 2013, the team dominated the championship, winning four consecutive titles with Vettel, who amassed 39 victories.
This period was marked by intense rivalries, particularly with Ferrari and McLaren. The duels between Vettel and Fernando Alonso in 2012 are memorable. A highlight was the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2013. Vettel ignored team orders and overtook teammate Mark Webber to win the race. The incident led to internal tensions within the team.
However, the transition to V6 turbo engines in 2014 poses challenges. Performance is stagnating due to reliability issues with the Renault engines. This leads to a growing rivalry with Mercedes, which dominates the season. After several difficult seasons, Red Bull experiences tensions with Renault. This leads to a search for a new engine partner.
An anticipated renaissance
Red Bull’s rebirth came in 2021 with the arrival of Max Verstappen. He becomes the pillar of the team. The season is marked by an intense battle with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sees Verstappen win the championship in controversial circumstances, marking a new era for the team.
Under the leadership of Christian Horner, Red Bull continues to innovate. Its partnership with Honda enables them to regain their competitive edge. In 2022, Verstappen won his second world title with an impressive series of victories and a record number of podium finishes.
In addition to its sporting success, Red Bull Racing is known for its marketing initiatives. The team attracts a wide audience and showcases its young talent through its driver development program. Red Bull has established itself as a benchmark in motorsport, racking up podiums and victories while competing with the best teams in the sport.
The Wonderkid
Max Verstappen is renowned for his aggressive and determined driving style. This sets him apart on the starting grid. His ability to make daring overtakes right from the start has earned him the nickname “Wonderkid” in Formula 1. He adapts quickly to race situations. His proactive approach allows him to take calculated risks, especially in the early laps, when he’s looking to gain positions.
Verstappen particularly shines in races in the rain. His understanding of changing conditions and his ability to find a grip where others struggle give him an edge. He has often made the most of difficult conditions. His memorable victory at the Belgian Grand Prix 2021 is a case in point, where he dominated despite the capricious weather.

Among his strengths, his exceptional consistency stands out. Verstappen regularly collects points. His tyre management is often praised, which optimizes his performance. However, his daring style can sometimes lead to mistakes. He has been involved in several controversial incidents during his career, often due to his aggressive manoeuvres. This has drawn criticism from commentators and rivals alike.
Despite these weaknesses, Verstappen remains one of the most talented drivers of his generation. His commitment to perfecting his driving is obvious.
His ability to learn from his mistakes makes him a formidable competitor in Formula 1. He knows how to adapt to different scenarios while maintaining a high level of performance.
A determined, outspoken pilot
Max Verstappen is known for his direct, outspoken personality. This can sometimes create tension, especially with his team-mates. His relationship with Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez is competitive. However, Verstappen has also developed friendships in the paddock. He is particularly close to Lando Norris. Their friendly rivalry is often nicknamed “Carlando” by fans, due to their warm dynamic.
Off the track, Verstappen’s passions include motorsports and karting. He also enjoys video games, which help him relax. He has invested in motorsport-related businesses and owns a clothing line. His presence on social networks is notable. He shares glimpses of his daily life, his races and his relationships with friends and family. This strengthens his bond with fans.
As for his public image, Verstappen is perceived as a determined and competitive driver. He is also seen as someone who knows how to have fun. Although he doesn’t always play the media game, he interacts authentically with his fans. He often shares moments from his life, helping to forge the image of a young driver who is accessible and passionate about his profession.

Max Verstappen has put in some impressive performances this season. He dominated the grid and won several races. This consolidated his status as defending champion. He has often finished on the podium. His racing skills were evident in his tire management and strategic choices. However, he has also encountered difficulties, such as withdrawals due to technical problems. Despite these challenges, he remains the most consistent driver of the season.
His relationship with the team and team-mate Sergio Pérez is performance-driven. They work together to maximize Red Bull’s results. However, there is a palpable competition between them, especially when Verstappen has far superior results. This contrasts with the friendlier dynamic between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, or the intense rivalry between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. Collaboration at Red Bull is pragmatic, with mutual respect. However, tensions can arise at decisive moments in the season.
As for the future, Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull for the next few seasons. This guarantees him a place in the team. He doesn’t seem to be in danger of losing his position, given his performance. Pérez is also under contract, but his place could be in doubt if he doesn’t reach a competitive level. However, there are no plans for Verstappen to retire, as he remains one of the most talented and ambitious drivers in the paddock.
Already a multiple world champion, Max Verstappen has established himself as a key figure in Formula 1. At every race, he pushes the limits and imposes his style. His future promises to be rich in success and records.
