The sun was shining ahead of the San Marino Tissot Sprint Race. Remnants of the earlier downpour had dried out and the track was in perfect condition. Throughout the weekend so far, there had been the tease of another back-and-forth battle between Marc Márquez and Marco Bezzecchi. With both Márquez brothers on the front row alongside pole-sitter and home hero Bezzecchi, the stage was set for 13 laps of intense action in Misano.
A Storming Start For Márquez
As the lights went out for the San Marino sprint, Marc Márquez was hot off the line and snapped up the holeshot. Bezzecchi was sticking close though, piling on the pressure in a bid to regain the lead. Jorge Martín also got off to a good start, up in to fourth as Álex Márquez dropped back to seventh.
At the start of the third lap, it was evident that there was another battle brewing. Gresini’s Fermín Aldeguer, was locked in a thrilling scrap with the KTM of Pedro Acosta. The pair were swapping positions almost constantly as they rounded corner after corner. The scrap gave Álex Márquez an easy pass to get himself back up into fifth. Behind them Raúl Fernández was ready to pounce. At Turn 10, Fernández made his move, slipping up the inside of Aldeguer and making the briefest of contact. It was enough to not only allow Fernández through, but also Luca Marini, dropping Aldeguer down to ninth.
Meanwhile, there was trouble for Fabio Quartararo, who attempted to put his Yamaha on the inside line at Turn 14 in a bid to pass Diogo Moreira. This resulted in contact between the pair, causing Quartararo to drop and slide across the track. The yellow flags came out, but Quartararo was quickly back up and on his bike to continue the race. On Lap 4, Marc Márquez set the fastest lap of the race so far, as he extended the gap back to Bezzecchi.
The Home Hero Fights Back
Jorge Martín could sense a podium was within reach, and was pushing hard against Fabio Di Giannantonio. As the pair made their way through Turn 8, Martín seized the opportunity and made his move. The Aprilia breezed past the VR46 rider to snap up third position. Up ahead, teammate Bezzecchi was caught in a back-and-forth battle when it came to setting the fastest lap. Every time it looked like he was able to best the times set by Márquez, the reigning champ would go that little bit faster.
It wasn’t all in vain, as Bezzecchi had managed to close the gap to the Ducati down to just half a second. With five laps to go, it was all to play for. The crowds were cheering on their home hero, willing him to catch Márquez. With two laps to go, Márquez set a new race lap record with a 1:30.734, beating the previous record of 1:30.887 set in 2024 by Pecco Bagnaia.
The final lap began and both of the front-runners were pushing hard, but it was Marc Márquez who crossed the line to take the victory as the chequered flags waved. Bezzecchi came home in second to achieve his best sprint result of the season. Meanwhile, championship leader Martín took the final podium spot. Just half a second further back, Di Giannantonio finished fourth, with Álex Márquez behind him in fifth. The final points paying positions were claimed by Acosta, Fernández, Aldeguer and Marini.
It’s Getting Tight At The Top
With another sprint victory for Márquez, and podium finishes for Bezzecchi and Martín, the top three in the championship are now separated by just 22 points. Sunday’s San Marino Grand Prix is set to be a spectacular showdown, but will we see a change in championship leader?
