The return of the Malaysia GP is “just a matter of time” according to the Motorsport Association Malaysia president.
Formula 1 raced their from 1999 until 2017 at the Sepang International Circuit. It dropped of the calendar for the 2018 onwards. The decision to cancel their contract early was taken due to increased costs hosting a Formula 1 event.

Tan Mokhzani Mahathir, Motorsport Association Malaysia president has stated that “in terms of being the host, it’s not the problem. It is a question of who is going to pay and whether we can afford it or not. I have no idea what is it {the cost} right now. but definitely it is higher than when we stopped in 2017”
Drive to Survive Effect!
Formula 1 has seen an increase in popularity, in part due to the Netflix series Drive to Survive. The series has taken Formula 1 to a new generation of fans, the effect of the increased popularity, is that more countries are wanting a slice of Formula 1.

Tan Mokhzani Mahathir confirmed that the recent boom in Formula 1 is responsible for the potential return to the F1 grid. “F1 is more popular that it used to be, it has a new audience after the Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ Netflix series while a lot of countries are bidding for the race as a statement for their country”
Sepang Circuit is Still Popular
The Formula 1 paddock and wider community still hope for the Malaysian GP to return to the calendar. When the topic of “which track would you like to return” Malaysia is usually on the tip of a majority of the F1 Fanbase.
The return of the Malaysian GP has a few hurdles to clear before it becomes a reality, however it would seem that the wheels are in motion, lets hope that they will gather speed and lead to the return of one of the better tracks in Formula 1
