A Race Full of Twists and Turns
The race began with pole-sitter Nick Cassidy making a strong start, maintaining his lead. Mitch Evans swiftly overtook Maximilian Günther to claim second place, while Jehan Daruvala fought his way into the top ten, aiming to recover from Maserati’s previous race woes.
By Lap 2, a significant incident occurred when Jake Dennis and Edoardo Mortara stopped at Turn 3 following contact with Sébastien Buemi. This collision broke Mortara’s steering wheel, which subsequently collected Dennis’ Andretti, prompting the first safety car of the day.
Early Chaos and Safety Cars
Racing resumed on Lap 5, with Evans attempting an unsuccessful overtake on his teammate Cassidy. Robin Frijns and Jean-Éric Vergne were the first top ten drivers to activate their Attack Mode. By Lap 7, championship leader Wehrlein had overtaken Günther for third place, just as another multi-car incident at Turn 6 involving Dennis, Sam Bird, and Norman Nato brought out the second safety car.
Following the restart on Lap 10, Cassidy activated his first Attack Mode, maintaining P1, while the tension between Evans and Cassidy grew, with Evans requesting to pass his teammate. As Cassidy took his second Attack Mode, Evans and Wehrlein both overtook him, shifting the dynamics at the front.
Strategic Battles and Energy Management
Throughout the race, Wehrlein and Evans were locked in a fierce battle. Wehrlein’s attempts to overtake Evans were initially unsuccessful, but his superior energy management (3% more power than the Jaguars) kept him in a strong position. Cassidy, meanwhile, was vocal about his dissatisfaction with his team’s strategy, which had left him in a compromised position despite starting from pole.
As the race progressed, Rowland emerged as a strong contender, overtaking Günther for fourth place, while António Félix da Costa climbed to sixth. The intensity of the competition between Wehrlein and Evans continued, with Wehrlein’s attempts to pass Evans becoming more aggressive.
The Final Laps: Drama Unfolds
With ten laps to go, Wehrlein made another move on Evans, which again was unsuccessful. However, the German driver’s energy advantage kept him in contention for the title. The race’s climax saw Cassidy suffer a puncture after being involved in a battle with da Costa and Günther, effectively ending his championship hopes.
