Max Verstappen topped Friday’s opening practice before championship leader Kimi Antonelli hit back by setting the pace in FP2, FP3 and Qualifying, securing his sixth pole position of the season. The Italian will line up alongside Verstappen on the front row, with the Dutchman hoping to challenge the young Italian going into La Source and deny Mercedes another victory.
The grid has already been shaken up before the lights go out. Lando Norris qualified third but will start 13th after taking a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his power unit allocation, promoting George Russell to P3 and promoting Charles Leclerc to the second row.
Ferrari also remains firmly in contention after Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton recovered well from a disrupted Saturday morning, with Hamilton’s mechanics completing an impressive rebuild following his FP3 crash.
As always at Spa, strategy could prove decisive. The longest lap on the calendar, unpredictable Ardennes weather and plenty of overtaking opportunities mean teams will have difficult decisions to make throughout the 44-lap race.
With Russell looking to reduce the gap in the championship, Verstappen chasing another victory, and Antonelli aiming to extend his title lead heading into the summer break, all the ingredients are in place for another memorable Belgian Grand Prix.
