LeClerc Leaps to Magic Miami Pole

Charles LeClerc has taken another pole position in 2022 as his hunt for his first F1 world championship continues. He topped all three qualifying sessions to take the first pole position at Miami.

The Monegasque was assisted by his Spanish teammate to take the first Ferrari 1-2 in qualifying since 2019.

Rounding out the top three is reigning world champion Max Verstappen. He was not quite able to hook up the final lap, and oversteered wide on his ultimately abandoned final flying lap.

The Mexican minister of defence Sergio Perez put the other Red Bull P4, just 0.06s behind his teammate. He finished ahead of the familiar pairing of Valtteri Bottas and blingmeister general Lewis Hamilton, who qualified P5 and P6 respectively.

P7 saw Piere Gasly have a much improved qualifying, finishing just ahead of McLaren youngster Lando Norris in P8 and Alfa Tauri alumni Yuki Tsunoda in P9. Rounding out the top 10 is Lance Stroll of Aston Martin, who has recorded a rare Q3 appearance.

Q2 saw the senior Spaniard Fernando Alonso just fail to make the cutoff for Q3, with Mercedes newboy George Russell having a tough day in P12.

F1’s resident good guy Sebastian Vettel qualified P13, and will line up alongside his old Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo who got his McLaren P14 on the grid.

Just behind him is Mick Schumacher who will start p15 alongside him teammate Kevin Magnussen in P16. The Haas duo will be looking to get some solid points tomorrow.

The rear of the grid sees F1 rookie Zhou Guanyu qualify P17, although his final flying lap was badly interrupted by traffic in the final sector leading to an abandoned lap.

P18 and P19 sees the Williams duo of Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi respectively. Latifi had an improved qualifying, he was only 0.05s behind his more experienced teammate.

Esteban Ocon was unable to take part in qualifying due to his accident in FP3. Ocon is fit to race, however his car has a cracked chassis so he was unable to take part today.
