Laura Mueller: F1’s First Female Race Engineer

Haas’ appointment of Laura Mueller as Esteban Ocon’s Race Engineer for 2025 marks a momentous occasion in F1 history. This historic decision marks the first time a woman has held this position in the sport’s illustrious history. This moment has broken a long-standing gender barrier in one of the sport’s most technical and demanding professions.

As a race engineer, Laura Mueller is the first point of call for the driver to their team and vice versa. She will manage on-track communications and actively provide valuable feedback to enhance performance.

Speaking on Laura Mueller’s impact, team boss Ayao Komatsu believes that she is a perfect fit for the team.

“We don’t care [about] nationality, gender – it really doesn’t matter because what matters is work. How you can fit into the team, how you can maximise the performance. I believe it is the right choice.” – Komatsu in discussion with Formula 1

Mueller’s appointment is a huge milestone for gender diversity in Formula 1, a sport historically dominated by men both on and off the track. In previous years progress has been made with the introduction of FIA’s “Girls on Track” program and F1 Academy. However, Mueller’s rise to this high-profile position signals a significant cultural shift.

Future is Female

Although Laura Mueller’s position as the first female race engineer in Formula One is a long-awaited milestone, it raises hopes that a female driver may soon grace the F1 grid. Whilst women have demonstrated their drive in junior categories, the path to Formula One remains elusive due to systematic impediments.

Mueller’s success illustrates that the sport is shifting towards a more inclusive culture, allowing women to excel in all roles. As diversity programs gain traction and more chances emerge, the potential of seeing a female driver race at the summit of motorsport seems closer than ever, pushing the next generation to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

Key Personnel Changes

Alongside Mueller, Carine Cridelich is set to join later this year from competitors Racing Bulls. Haas has also announced the promotion of Ronan O’Hare to Race Engineer for Ocon’s teammate Oliver Bearman, amongst other key changes.
